Second Coolant Temp. Megasquirt
Wednesday, August 05, 2009 1:25 PM
Hey yall.

I'm done 90% of my megasquirt setup.
But I need an extra coolant temp sensor.
Haven't really looked to see,
Just wondering if anyone knew where a good place to mount a second clt would be.

Thanks.

I cant tell you how many time's Ive redone mine trying to get it right. however Ive got it pretty close. for starters your obviously going to want to gert it as close to the stock unit as possiable. the method i found to be best, is to grab a brass t fitting from any harware store, and run it inline with your rad line coming from the thermostat. now if you care you can either solder (industrial style) or find a way to out in the 3/8 npt fitting it requires to thread the sensor.

OR

you can just silicone seal the sensor in the t, then Jb weld around it for a perfect seal. Its not the prettiest thing in the world, but it gets the job done, and Ive had it installed for three years with no leaks. its going to read about 5 degrees cold at full hot, so for a perfect measre for your closed and open loops, just install the stock sensor in your homeade setup and run the squirts sensor to the stock unit. 3

ill try and load some pics up I should have them

or just replace your stock sensor with a 3 wire unit....it duplicates the output, use one for the factory ecu and the other for the MS....no big deal.

+1 This is what I did with mine. While I don't know the exact part number, if you go to the parts store you would order a coolant temp sensor for a 93 Cavalier w/ 2.2 engine. You'll also need a TPS pigtail.

Drill and tap the TB housing next to the stock sensor.

Stupid to do when you could just replace with a 3-wire sensor.

BTW, the 3-wire sensor is a little longer. It didn't seem like it was going in all the way on my car because it would bottom out, but it threads in pleanty to keep it from leaking.

hey, i dont think this sensor is the right one. I just ordered and installed it, but found it didnt act as expected. So, i took it back out and ohmed it. it appears there is ONE variable resistance output to drive a guage or megasquirt, but the other output is just a switch. So, its open unitl a certain temperature is reached, then it will go closed. not sure what that temp is, but it reads wide open with a meter at room temp. I just orded this new sensor becuase the one i pulled out of a j/y car read this same way and i assumed it was bad. appearently not, its just not the sensor i need, but both are probably good. Could anyone recommend another sensor that actually has TWO variable resistance outputs?

I can get you the part number in a few weeks.... ....when I finally get to go home for 2 days out of 8 weeks.
