If I installed an exhaust cutout on my cav will I lose power, I searched and couldnt find much on it but I heard most cars lose power from using them unless boosted. Im running light bolt ons
Maybe if your NA you might lose power, I dunno. Good question. Ive also heard if you have F/I that you gain power

I've got one directly off the downpipe on my car. Mind it is boosted.
Feels like I'm getting a lot more torque, but thats my feeling.
I heard a exhaust cut out helps the turbo spool faster, but what do I know, I drive all motor baby.

This is fact and not fiction.
The less restriction you have with a turbo on the exhaust, the better flow you have to the turbo and faster the spool.
On a n/a car, the exhaust cutout would help you out at the drag strip where all your power curve goes to the top end of your rpm range.
Here is where you'll need the hp to get that better trap speed with no restriction to the exhaust while at wot.
I've got this to have the same effect when I go to the strip.
Side exit exhaust that can easily be removed so that this can go back in it's place for street driving.
That's the Atomic exhaust I just got in and with the Vband setup, will be using both setups for street and for strip.

Thank you Dave and JBO!

That looks amazing Misnblu! Very nice and all v-bands would be a breeze!
Yeah and it would also cut down on the weight of a cutout too.
I'm all for weight reduction and this in my opinion is the way to go in place of a cutout.

hey thanks, hopefully with my new cutout yet to be installed I can make it into the 14's finally. only 2 tenths to go
A good tune would probably get you there or some good weight reduction,
Looking at your list of mods, they're similar to a friends 1SV he had and got into the 14's with pretty much the same mods but at the expense of doing alot of weight reduction to achieve this.
But let us know how your cutout helps as it should help you some in achieving your goal.
Good luck.

Blu, that exhaust idea is great. I am always fascinated by your work. Would a v-band be an adequate way to hold on a muffler or to insert a resonator?..at least until I am satisfied with the results and get it welded?
* * BIG FOR SALE POST * *
Well I've never used a v band configuration before so I guess I'll find out what it's all about.
I like the idea and believe it's the best way to do an exhaust.
I do believe that there's alot of work to do a v band exhaust so if that's the way you're going, keep it that way.
Remember too that Atomic made up this exhaust and had a group purchase way back in the spring.
This is way better than any muffler shop could conceive and one of the reasons I chose Atomic to do an exhaust for me.
I've always been fascinated with the side exit and had one on my 1966 Buick Skylark a long time ago.
I loved it then and will love this for the track.
If the exhaust isn't on by this weekend it'll be on by next weekend.
Hopefully by then the 'blu will be ready to be driven again.

I really like your exhaust idea Misnblu. I may try that if I cant find a good spot to put my cutout. My car is my DD and so I cant have a honkin hangin piece of steel hanging to scrape on everything. I may try out your exhaust Idea tho. I like the idea of the sidepipe and being able to remove the exhaust from the axle back. I also do some somewhat extensive weight removal basically all the seats but my own and then spare tire and jack and any more would be nice if I could figure out anything else to take out
After I removed the seats, jack, spare, I took out the whole interior, took out the entire ac/heat system, radio, airbags, everything that wasn't needed to go down the 1/4. Then I went though the interior wiring harness and took out all the extra wires and ran the few that had to stay, like tail lights, tag light, and blinkers, the way I wanted them (for quick trouble shooting if some thing ever were to go wrong).
I am not quite sure how light it is now, but with stock brakes, stock steelies I can stop from 80 mph in about 50 ft.

OMG, you really went ballistic with the weight reduction. lol
Nothing wrong with that but you do plan on reinstalling the interior?
How about some pics of this beast and if you've got some timeslips, let's hear of what the lightened car can do.

sry, no pictures or timeslips, car isnt reliable enough to drive a hour to the track yet. Got to sort out my cv axle problem, and no, i dont plan on re installing the interior, I am trying to build a track car.

nice work blu. havent seen u in awhile
I'm still here, slowly getting the 'blu to where I want her.
Looks like it's going to be another week before the exhaust goes on.
Not enough time this weekend and still planning out an abs delete for the brakes.

Thats my next step, deleting the abs, I'll let you know if i find a good read on it, or how mine goes.

I have a cutout but im boosted too, i also deleted my abs!
You need a new distributioin and prop block.
I literally just helped a buddy put an electric cutout on his wrx. The turbo spools much faster, and the boost comes on at a lot lower RPM.
i forgot to add. I really like the flames lol.

My understanding on the NA side of things is if you have a built engine with high compression and large cams making higher rpm power than a cutout will help. If you have an engine that is basically stock it wont help much, if not kill your performance since it kills your low end torque. But you dont want your exhaust to be too restrictive.
On my old 92 cavy with 2.2 I had to replace the cat and drove around with just the manifold and downpipe for a couple days. gas mileage went to hell and it lost a LOT of power. While with my old chevy truck it had decent power with manifolds and restrictive exhaust but wouldnt pull too much past 5000 rpm. When I changed to a flex fan and put on some headers, the exhaust wasnt hooked up yet, it pulled to 6500 and wanted to keep going.
Jason,
Like I said in my PM mine hasn't hurt my performance at all, might of even helped a bit.
I ran it open versus closed at the track once and the results where.
(Mods at the time were, Intake, full exhaust, engine mounts, tranny mounts)
Open-
15.0
Closed-
15.2
15.4
Open again-
15.0
All the runs were done within a half-hour of each other. Not sure if it was a fluke traction issue but thats what I got as results.
At the same time tho, my car ran 15.0 at the end of last season with just a intake and cat-back. So take the data any way you want.
With it open I'm now running 14.8 on the motor (Mods in reg) hoping for 14.6 by the end of the season with a bit more tunning and some higher lauches.
I'm headed to the dyno at the beginning of october, I plan on doing a run with it open vs. closed....I'll post the results.
with my saab setup, i notice i can build boost a lot quicker.
I also can shoot flames between shifts and when getting on it from 1st to 2nd gear
thanks newt, im definantly gonna have something done by this next weekend hopefully
any one got pics of there cut out and were thay put it
