2.4L cam blanks
Sunday, September 06, 2009 1:17 PM
I have recently been wondering why no one talks about using 2.4L cam blanks. I know 2.3L blanks allow for huge lift and duration but they are all gone now. So why no talk about 2.4L blanks? I know re-grinding LD9's doesn't yield the high lift number's most want but surely starting from straight blanks could yield spec's at least somewhat close to W41's or HO spec's.

All info, idea's and comments welcome.

Fine, 2.3L blanks are not all gone, but good luck finding them.

Why aren't there any 2.4L blanks?

The better question, why doesn't somebody who wants cams have more blanks made....lets not pretend the equipment to make them isn't in use anymore. Cam blanks are nothing special at all, just have them made.

because having a set of blanks 'made' would probably cost more than any j-body owner is willing to pay.

and when you can drop ho cams right in with a little help if you'd like to utilize stock components and make good power, why the hell would you want ld9 blanks?

lets look at the statistics..

karos 259whp n/a motor had ho cams
fetters 552whp boosted motor has ho cams
skillz 292whp boosted motor (auto trans and only 6psi) had ho cams

all of which had/have miller performance modded ho cams. seeing a trend here?

Well, by blanks I meant any diameter raw you want, and when talking blanks there would be little to no difference between the price of 2.3 or 2.4 blanks.....So, no need to mod? Maybe a plus there somewhere for those looking for stock 2.4 look under the hood but want 2.3 lift?

Also, until somebody gets a quote, I would think they could be made reasonably priced....no, I didn't say cheap either...I said reasonable. By the time you buy the 2.3L blanks, have them machined down and then modded....it will be close to a 2.4 cam blank with custom grind I'm pretty sure.

hell while were at it lets get some custom billet sticks made LOL

realistically though... the ld9 valvetrain cant even handle higher lift that most would want so you almost need to upgrade to the 2.3 cams anyways.

i do respect you for wanting other parts for us though. i dont see a point in 2.4 blanks thats all. but thats just my opinion.

I am not trying to say HO's are not great cams. I was simply wondering why no one is talking about 2.4L blanks with all the bub bub about no more 2.3L blanks. Honestly I will probably run HO or W41 cams, it was just a question someone at work asked and it got me thinking.

If im not mistaken its because crane made 2.3 cams and had 2.3 blanks for sale since the quad4 became popular. crane never made cams for the 2.4 and im pretty sure gm made the 2.4 cams as soon as the castings were made, not laving any blanks.

actually... im pretty sure ALL of the quad 4 cam blanks came from cwc foundry or something like that.

thats what jerry clay at crane cams told me when i first purchased the blanks from them. he also said crane worked with gm on the olds aerotech project way long ago.

and yep... there wasnt enough potential or even market for any companies to really want to follow suit with any ld9 blanks. although i could be wrong. ive only be around since 2001. i remember rk sport used to sell some cams, dont know what those were eactly...

some of the real old schoolers could chime in with some more info im sure...higgins, taetsch, david... where you boys at?

I don't want to open a can of worms here but will the W41's fit in a stock bottom end LD9? If I am not mistaken, gmanz24 (The Bash Whore), ran / runs w41's on a stock bottom end. I just want to know if the valves will clear the pistons with W41's in there.

yes. they do. gary is even running 99+ pistons and the car runs just fine. has been for quite some time now.

besides.. w41 cams wouldnt be any closer to hitting the pistons that ho cams.. they both share .410 lift.

My brother Jared owns the 438 hp ld9 that is in my sig. I do a lot of the work on it. This was speedracerz's old motor. It about time to keep up with fetter
