ok well I got the 97 head for install for my LD9, now of course needs cleaning, and the exhaust in intake sides are quite a bit bigger then mine, and the valves are bronze type color( could be oil but not sure), it looks like had the Port and Polish already done, but I am going to see if I can go a little more aggressive on the ports, now I was going to upgrade the springs and retainers but...........I have all the springs but missing 2 of the retainers for the exhaust side. She was getting upgraded because planning on going ho cams with this head, and orderign 10.5:1 pistons for the new build, since my rods should be good, I am reusing the crank as I do not want to pay for work to get another one done, and planning on keeping the mellings pump as I have had no problems running up the rpm ranges. now my question is.......couldn't we use the 2.4 retainers and keepers with the 2.3 springs? I think I remember reading somewhere that they were the same strength.
There are 2 of us here in Alberta that plan on building bigger and better Mister Brad up here (use to be JCO ), and me planning bigger things, me and Brad are also thinking the 2.3 and 2.4 retainers and keepers should not make a difference for the install of the 2.3 springs..........Anyone have any imput? and with the debate that we had about a month ago......seems like not much difference between the 97 heads and the 1999+ heads

do a 2.3 oil pump swap for fact of lighter rotating assembly as well as lighter engine weight.
like i said in pm... 2.4 retainers are too small for 2.3 springs.

we may as well pull your engine AJ, it'll make everything much easier, then you can do your clutch at the same time.
ya but I need the 2 retainers now grrrrrrr F*CKING 2.3

Well its not ideal but 2.4 retainers will work on 2.3 springs. I did for a while, but never exceded factory rev limit with the exception of the drop from third to second at the top of third once. Then I went with 2.3 retainers, still not 100% perfect but much better than 2.4 retainers.
well wtf... u got pics clyde??
to me looks way too small to fit over em

ya I read somewhere i think on here that you can use the 2.4 springs because the .24 and 2.3 retainers are the same strength

my retainers!!!!!!!!!

so basically the 2.4 are only a small amount smaller then the 2.3 retainers so might be ok to use, Im questioning it, if only I didnt lose the 2 retainers

I would not recomend it but it can be done. They are a lot2.3 retainer but do the spring where it belongs.
Well I plan on doing 2.3 retainers if can find the other 2

They are out there, just have to look in the right places. I picked mine up from the dealer. The Ti. retainers I had made, actually cost me less than the factory ones.
hmmm how much did it cost for the ti ones? and why wouldnt u trust the ho ones?

Its very hard to tell but the Ti. ones are a copy of the 2.3 retainer but have the ever so slightly smaller 2.4. keeper pocket. My only concern with the 3 retainers was that the keepers sat to low in the retainer for my liking. The chances of them ever coming out are slim to none but its all personal preferance.
All im going to say about the Ti. ones is that I got them for a hell of a deal. I am sure material cost has gone up by now though. I can always check for you if you are serious. Brad already has dibs on my remaining set.
do we need the top and bottom keeper? or just the top one?

There is only one retainer. I think you are thinking of the rotator on the intake side and the spring seat on the exhaust side. Both keepers are located between the retainer and the valve stem up at the top.
thats it, that i was thinking

Im bringing this back from dead, anyone change valve stem seals? Im planning to replace these ones just incase, I have the head half cleaned, valves are in the process soon, chamber cleaned, have the 2.3 springs and retainers, now why can't we use the 2.4 lifters on the springs? Im thinking of it due to fact less weight, and there was a thread that meantioned about the secret cams, on how the exhaust cam was meant for the 35mm lifters but work on the 33mm, so anyone ever measure if the 2.4 lifters would work or not? I still haven't figured out the best way to do the p/s yet, either 2.4 or 2.3, but if we can use the 2.4 towers without boring, and mod the cam to work wouldn't the lower weight be beneficial? with the stiffer springs to prevent valve float?
