Is a cat install a completely bolt-on affair?
Friday, April 09, 2010 1:04 PM
My downpipe broke in half. It's been on the car since 1995 so I'm not surprised.

So I'm thinking of picking up a cat online, but when I get it will it just be the two bolts at the manifold and the three bolts at the catback? (And gaskets of course)

I'm just wondering if I could pull of the install in a parking lot with some jackstands. Not too keen on driving the car until I can get it fixed and all the shops are 15 minutes away.

i doubt it will be with 15 years of rust on the bolts and piping. more than likely a sawzall will be involved.

My friend bought a magnaflow hi flow cat for his car, it DID NOT come with flanges, and had to be welded in. you might be able to get away with clamping it, but I wouldnt recommend it.

I'm not ording just the cat. I'm ordering OEM replacement with downpipe and flanges.

Wow, be ready for completely insane prices my friend. You're better off just getting an equivalent CAT thru whatever exhaust shop you want to do the work, even then you could still save more money getting one online, but taking it to an exhaust shop is the much easier route.

All the shops I spoke to were quoting me or a new cat with install on top. It broke right up at the flange at the manifold and I guess they can't get just the downpipe w/flange. I dunno.

u might as well get a header, magnaflow high flow universal cat and a muffler and bring it to an exhaust shop to have them bend up a custom exhaust and weld it all together...it will prob be cheaper than getting the OEM replacements

hey if its not broke dont fix it but if it is....UPGRADE!!...lol

The problem with most shops is the fact that they do "crush" bends and not "mandrel" bends. Remember the old saying goes "You get what you pay for".
