I bought my cavalier with a crappy ebay cold air intake. Does the aem intake really make a good bit of difference?
No. Cheap eBay intake will work just the same. Just make sure you put a good filter on it.
you just asked the question "does one tube of XX size and shape flow better than an identical tube".
an intake is just that, a tube with a filter on the end. no, it will not give you 50 hp. no, it will not give you even 10 hp. it will make a neat little noise, and make the engine bay a little shinier.

^^^I'm pretty sure he asked a simple question, that deserved a simple answer.
You sir need to pull your dick out of your own @!#$ and quite being such a pole smoker.
^^he wasn't being a dick. Just answering the question in detail.
So maybe you should put the dick back in your mouth to shut you up.
this answer could have been found by searching...
Trevor, slow down and just read the facts. It really helps to look around on the site first. Im a noob and i have gotten my fare share of being told to use the search button. In the end its worth the time.
Yes, BUT...not every new person knows how to utilize the search option, and when some people come in here being mean, it really can deter people. Some people really could learn how to use some discretion. It's not that hard. Not everyone prevails from negative influence.
And Mike, the OP didn't come in here asking if the AEM would make his car UBER FAST, he just asked if it would be better than the eBay knock off. Some people don't know. Remember, everybody has to start off somewhere, so YES Rich was being a dick.
Douchebaggery aside, just replace the filter. In fact, I would keep your tube and get the AEM filter. I like the no oiling thing.

i think rich's answer is waranted... it actually educates the op about intakes. so instead of just answering the question, he taught the OP about intakes and what they do vs what the general n00b thinks about them.
also there is no excuse for not knowing how to search... theres like a sticky about it in virtually every informational forum...

i still don't get these kind of responses. i've been using a k+n filter for quite awhile now with no issues, and i've cleaned and oiled it several times over. it's not that hard.
Well than I'll be the first to say, hell with an ebay intake. Get the AEM. I had an RKSPORT WAI, switched to an AEM CAI and noticed a big difference top end specially after a 62mm TB installed (Only had Crank Pulley, Header, Intake , Exhaust, Hi-flow cat back then). Do i know about using an ebay CAI? No, and I just frankly don't want to. I think the bends created or designed is what may make the difference. If the bends are identical, quality looks good, I'd still buy an AEM.

and you'd be wasting about $200.

There will be no noticeable difference between any intakes that you listed.

^^^ This..
so many flaws in that statement... a CAI is almost always going to be more productive than a WAI in a J. And RK Sport is not a knock off brand. further this statement is made on speculation and opinion, not on fact.

eBay intakes are definitely not crappy. The filters that come with them tend to be crappy, but not the piping itself. I see you have a 2200 in your Cavalier. I bought an eBay intake for my '02 Sunfire Sedan with the 2200. It was an AEM cold air knockoff. It worked great and was WAY less than the real thing. All I did was buy a real AEM Dry Flow filter for it because the filter it came with was junk. The piping had all the proper holes, hoses, etc. The only thing I had to get for it was a grommet for the IAT hole, other than that, I highly recommend an eBay intake over an AEM / K&N / etc. No reason to spend more money for nothing more than a name.

Personally I only use AEM Dry Flow filters as well. I have heard horror stories about people accidentally over-oiling their K&N filter and having major issues with their engines. Totally not worth the hassle in my opinion.
Its a good question, and one of the guys is right, it doesn't make a real difference between an Ebay and a name brand. Its simple marketing; the flow dynamics are nothing special or variable. The type of filter can matter (mainly the style and the porousness of the material), but you can get all of the range for a decent price apiece. The location can matter too, in case you have one thats some sort of different orientation (didn't mention what application?), but you probably have it some way that still won't matter.
The name brand thing is good for just that, the name. Find an AEM sticker if you want and slap it on, you can't beat $20 value for performance vs. the $200 for a CAI, spend it on something that can actually help performance.

There are horror stories for everything(including plugging in a simple vacuum cleaner). Just follow the directions and their wont be a problem.

idk how much some of the guys think an intake will get, but i actually dyno'd a few diff. intakes on an 03 civic(dx i think) and the aem got .4 hp .2 tq, k+n got .7 hp .3 tq, and the other was like typhoon or something like that, and it got 1.1 hp, and .2 tq. these things don't make much on their own. in order to see a gain, you need a bigger tb, bigger intake mani, and bigger on the exhaust side. then things will be a bit different. bolt ons need to work together, alone they are crap.
I switched to a WEAPON R FOAM FILTER... Much better man. I spent 50 bucks or so (i posted about it) and will stick to foam style filters from now on

those numbers to me mean nothing, as an error rate of +/-5% is to be expected. think about that. at 100 hp, that's a error range 10 HP wide. an intake is now, and always will be, just a tube and a filter.

foam filters are actually about the worst you can get as far as filtering properties, sure they flow great, but if it's not filtering, whats the point?

Not to mention once the foam element dries out and starts getting sucked into the engine.
I'm sure it doesn't happen with every ebay air intake but when I brought mine from ebay the filter always rubbed against the hood when I closed it and it was hard getting the hose coupling over the throttle body. I tried to adjust it but nothing seemed to work. It was for my 97 2.2, so I kinda made my own.

Just washed and re-oiled my K&N today. I <3 it.
