ECOtec motor swap

Ok, I ended up having an 04 Malibu "Classic" dropped in my lap. $1500 but needs a motor.
No it is not a J-Body, however given the motor is common here, I'd ask here in addition to the ECOtec forums.

The car I have has a 4th VIN of "N" and 8th "F". Looking it up, it seems there were like 6 different 2.2 ECO's put into these cars. My combo being the most unusual. It is only $300 price difference between the two locally, but if I can swap over manifolds or make an EGR block off plate to save $300, I am all for it.

Does anyone here know if they are essentially swappable? Will the starter being the same location, all the correct bolt holes? Sensors?

Any input would be a great help.

4th digit N = an N body.. same as a Grand Am, Alero etc... similar to the J-body, but a little bigger.

8th digit = F which is the engine code, F = the L61 Ecotec.

I don't know who told you there were 6 different Ecotecs... there shouldn't be. There's just one. In fact.. there were only 4 engines (total) available in the Classic. The 2.2L (L61) Ecotec which you have, then the 3.5L (LX9) V6, the 3.5L (LZ4) V6, and the 3.9L (LZ9) V6.

And out of 31,330 Malibu Classics that year, 28,145 had that same L61 engine. The block should be the same as the L61 in the J-body cars, but with returnless-style fuel injection, electronic throttle control and a special unitized exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. The intake manifold and all that crap is different too... but you can swap that stuff over.

I was using www.car-part.com and it listed 6 variations. Which had me confused. So worse case is fuel lines, and maybe a mani swap. I have the engine listed int he very bottom, without an EGR port in the head. See, the Malibu came in N body form and also the new style, that most people see as the MAXX although there were more than just teh 3.5 MAXX motor installed in that year.
Thanks for the input, and hope this shows why I was confused. Seems I wasted a lot of time on learning about the Quad 4 motors.

Car-part is good, in general... but it's not quite right in all instances. See it lists the top three as VIN Z, but then later in the parentheses it's changed to VIN F. The Z would mean it's the LZ4 engine, the 3.5L with the VVT option. They don't even list the 3.5L without the VVT..

So, you don't have an EGR system on your engine? Then the port could be blocked off, if you happen to get a block that has one.
