ok so i have a 2001 z24 2.4 and i bought a head from a 1997 z24 that has benn port worked and i would like to put it on my car but from all the info i have found some say it will work and some say it wont, due to the 2001 bieng a non egr and the 97 is suposive egr head. so isthat the the only thing different about the two and can i just make a block off plate to cover ware the egr is supposed to be? really want to use this ported head. please help....

I thought the 2000-02 had a block off plate. That should be the only difference with the head.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

I went to advance auto and had them bring up the head gasket for both and apparently the watercooling holes and the oil passage holes are different and the 2001 has a couple holes that 97 does not. Not sure if that makes a difference until I get the heads off and compare them side by side but was hoping to find out before I get it all apart.

The 97 head has a smaller combustion chamber than the 99-02 heads do. You can swap it over, and gain a little power. I do not remember which head gasket you need to run 96-98 or 99-02.

The 99-02 manifold will block of the EGR on the exhaust side. Then run a plate on the intake side, and use a 99-02 intake manifold.

my biggest concern is that the oil passage holes as well as the steam holes between the cylendars are smaller on the 01 head gasket. And there is an extra hole on the 01gasket near the edge of the block that is not on the 97 gasket i think is for oil return. So should I use the head gasket with the bigger holes or the head gasket that matches the head or the head gasket that matches the block?

I do not recall, but I know it has been posted before on the forums.

All ld9 heads have the same egr passage. Any year head will work on any year block.

RIP silver car. You will be missed.

Ok so I got a head gasket for the 01 and placed it on top of the 97 head and it seems there is a hole on the end of the head opposite of the thermostat that is about five sixteenths in diameter that is not drilled into the head but I could really through into the water jacket there are also a couple of smaller holes on the thermostat and that could also be drilled into the water jackets on the head. I don't know if this is necessary but I think it would match the block. If anyone has used a 97 on an 01 block and it worked I would like to know if that works without drilling holes.

I have a 96 head on my 01 block using 01 gasket and didn't drill didn't compare just bolted on and went. I have no oiling or overheating issues. This will bump the compression slightly but you probably wont notice much difference.
