LN2 2200 gen3 1.7 rockers...
Sunday, January 11, 2015 8:05 AM
So I was comparing a gen3 LQ4 stock 1.7 rocker to a '98 & newer LN2 stock 1.6 rocker & @!#$, they look pretty damn similar! Looks Tom me that I can use the ln2 rocker pedestal on the ls rocker. Not sure which bolt will work best. I have a spare 2200 head at my shop & I'm gonna see how they work out. If the geometry is good then I could prob use the stock 2200 pushrods as well.
Here's a few pics of the 2 rockers...
The ln2 rocker is the one w/ no brarings...

The only issue I see is that there will be no way to adjust the lash. i suppose you could shim the rocker upwards on the pedestal.

I kicked around the idea of using LS rockers in my motor years ago when i went back to stock. I know the theoretical difference between a true 1.6 and the LN2 is .06 (ln2 is 1.54 iirc) but i noticed no difference in AFR going back to the stock parts.

The main reason i went back to stock was knowing that I have seen a few LS guys run stock rockers to over 7500 without problems and the LN2 are non-adjustable. This makes engine assembly a bit easier as all i would do after a heat cycle of the motor.

Still interesting to see if this works out. Personally I would only bother on an n/a setup. If the motor is built and boosted I would just cam it bigger and leave stock rockers.

Unfortunately the '98 & newer pedestal can't b shimmed as far as I know because of the groove to keep it aligned on the bottom. But this idea would b for the guys only doing a "bolt on" mod like swapping for a higher ratio rocker & stuff. If the geometry is correct u could just swap in the 1.7 ls or prob at max the 1.8 ls7 stock ductile iron rockers to gain some lift w/o ripping apart the engine.
I'm doing a lq4 408 swap in my s10 & i was looking at the rockers & i was like @!#$ they look the same. So if they fit they would b a viable option for a bolt on mod.
There's Def no adjustability, just tourque 'em down & go!

I'd look into the fulcrum bearing replacement kit & tools first, before anything else... And I'd do a bench-test with a long-block on a stand & an adjustable pushrod, just to double-check geometry & see what spring-related issues result. Remember: You're pushing the valve further open, so you might need more valve length & spring height... Maybe even look into "beehive" or even cone-shaped springs.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

I compared the rockers on a spare 6146 2200 head & the geometry looks good wit a stock set up. Unfortunately the ls rocker has less travel then the 2.2 rocker which is easily fixed by grinding the 2.2 pedastal on both front & back sides. I can't tell 100% if the grinding is necessary because I would need to have the head installed so I could spin the crank. I took pics but for some reason I can't post them.
To me this would be a good mod for some1 wanting to go another route with rockers.
