You should be able to, when my friend roled his s10 my brother took some of the parts from his motor and combined them into his 2.2 in his cav to get better tq and hp, something about mixing the 95-96 and 97-99 2.2 gets you more power by swapping eather cam or rockers. not sure what though

its all about power to weight

it will bolt right on no problem.
if your putting the cav head on the s10 you will need to remove the frost plug at the front of the head to fit the thermostat housing , use the s10 headgasket and egr junk on the back of the head

if the head is from an s10 going on the cav you will have to put a frost plug in the front of the head ,must use cav head gasket and use egr junk and thernostat housing from the cav.
this will work if you have a 94 and the s10 is a 95-96

NO. You can't swap anything from 2.2 to 2200 or vice versa and make more HP and Torque. http://www.ny-jbodies.org/library/engine/2.2/2.2history.htm

Actually you can swap the rockers from the '98+ to the older vehicle, bit it takes more work than just swapping the rockers.
The '98+ rocker arms are supposed to be a 1.6:1 ratio, 1.54 to 1.56 is what was measured, which is still an increaseover the supposed1.5:1 for the '97 & older.
The extra work comes from having to remove the guide plates and cutting the push rod guides off the plates. Basically what you are doing is turning them into spacers for the rocker studs, since the '98+ rockers are self guiding. Then reinstall the rocker studs and install the '98+ rockers to the same toque specs as the stock rockers.
This will net approximately 0.442" to 0.448" valve lift, from what was 0.430" valve lift. This is only a small gain, that will mostly affect the mid range rpm with no other mods. This would only be worth the effort if you happen to have a set or are given a set of '98+ rockers. If you have to buy the rockers, you would be better off doing a full roller rocker conversion.

really though, theres no advantage of doing it that way it's better to just replace the rockers on the pre 98 2.2's with 1;6:1 rockers that are ment to fit.... for a small increase in performance it's not worth it.

my question is sitll not answered.. why would someone want to put a 2.2 head out of a s10/sonoma on to a pre 97 cavalier? really does it make sense? is the head really all that different? rockers? bigger portS?

Some people would like the smaller heart shaped combution chambers of the '98+ head. This would increase the compression ratio, and the chamber design is a fast burn design. The problem is that the '98+ head has square intake ports, which don't match the older design and smaller exhaust ports, while they build more torque, impeade the higher RPM flow. The '98+ also uses a composite(plastic) intake which cannot be ported.

so a pre 97 head is the same head as a S10?

The cylinder head on all 2.2L OHV's were the same from'94 to '97, irregardless if it was in a Cavi or S-10. The differences are with the freeze plug located on of the front of the head on 2.2L in the Cavi is not used, instead a water outlet is mounted there on the S-10. Also the S-10 uses a different EGR Valve and intake runners(not the plenum). The intake runners are curved differntly, but are the same diameter.
The '98+ 2200 heads are different from the previous model heads as outlined above, but once again the Cavi and the S-10 used the same heads, its all a matter of the year of manufacture. Not sure about the changes to the water outlet or intake, but the '98+ 2200's didn't use an EGR.
The heads are interchangeable, as long as you get the correct year and use the correct acessories(freeze plugs, water outlet,EGR, intake, etc...).
