Supertech springs Installed!! no coil bind
Tuesday, June 09, 2009 8:13 PM
A lot of members (here) doubted that supertech springs will work because of the ecotecs shorter installed height. And that the springs would coil bind at something like .400 inch lift.

Well I have installed Supertech's 78 lb springs and comp blower cams, and with the cams installed the coils on the spring do not bind!
They are a complete drop in spring set.

what lift cams are you running?

i've cross referenced the supertech 94# springs to GMR springs and they're identical

Interesting note about the GMR springs and 94# supertechs.

Comp blower cam lift specs
Intake .423
Exhaust .436

Did you not even pull the head to do that?

How hard was it to do?

any special tools?

on topic.....Can you mathematically confirm the springs fit. If they are in.....there in, but why does the math NOT match the ACTUAL results? Glad to hear they work!

You use something kinda like a compression tester. You take the cams out, take the fallowers off, and you use the tool to blow compressed air into the cylinder to pressurize it through the spark plug hole. When you pressurize it it keeps the valves from falling in, the air holds them in place, then there is a tool that bolts on top of the head that will push down and compress the spring so you can get the retainers and stuff off. Swap the parts compress the spring again and reinstall. It's a little intimidating if you've never done it but it's not hard.

Here is supertech's NEW sheet.
If you notice the 78lb springs coil bind height is still 0.815" , which is the same as I drew a year ago.

Now the 76lb springs are a different story. They coil bind at 0.748". Which would allow cams with 0.462" lift.

I might be making this OVERLY simple, and by doing so missed something that would allow for more lift. If in fact that is the case, could someone please explain it to me......or what I'm overlooking.

Simple, the retainer is not flat like the OE one is, so basically the spring opened total height is bigger than with the OE ones

Btw first time I see the 78 kit, so this one is using the stock valve seal + seat right ? No clearance issue between the inner spring and the seat ?

Erm, oops, with "opened" here I meant uncompressed/installed height... typo, sorry

So your saying the retainer is dished / grooved. If that is so, it would allow more lift, and any idea on how deep the retainers are compared to stock?

It would be nice to know for future.....

Right, the supertech springs look like similar height uncompressed, but has one less coil on the outer spring, and the retainer is dished for a higher installed height (box says 34.6mm or 1.362in)

Used the stock valve stem seals, the third picture shows the inner spring seat that allows the inner spring to seat without damaging the valve seal.

Also, all this was done on car without the head removed, you need something to pressurize the cylinders (I used my leak down tester) and a spring compressor that bolts onto the head where the camshaft caps go.

These are much cheaper the ferrera right?

I got them from thmotorsports.com
They are less than $350. The ferrera springs with the locators and retainers are somewhere over $5-600
