Local HP Tuners help me, please!!!
Tuesday, May 15, 2007 8:33 AM
Ok so I had my 04 Sport Coupe dynoed on Sat & from idle to about 5500 rpms it was running upwards of a 17.1 a/f ratio @ WOT it leveled out to about stoich (14.4). Needless to say its running way lean & robbing me of a lot of power. I want to have it tuned but the shop that dynoed it wants $600 to tune w/HPT. For an extra $50 plus shipping & such I could just buy HP Tuners Pro. Problem is I have no clue where to begin if I buy it. Is it a fairly easy program to learn or should I have an experienced tuner show me?

Would anyone be willing to point me in the right direction once I buy the software? Even better if theres anyone in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia that would show me that would be great!

How easy is it to do... our car club (that the originial poster is a member of) wants to eventually be able to do the same thing for fellow Js in VA/NC ... pay for credits and we'll tune...

is the software straight forward or is it super easy to @!#$ up a car if someone doesnt know what their doing???

It's very easy to mess up a car if you have no clue what your doing. Most of it is pretty easy to figure out, but there are a couple parameters that could really easily mess up the motor.

WhininZ thanks for the offer. I'm not exactly sure when I'll buy HPT but I might just make that trip because I definitly wanna learn to use the program and get the basics of tuning down, plus I wouldn't mind a vacation anyway, lol.

I'm pretty sure Kyle has some more questions though.

trent: i think i'll ride up there with ya .... also i just noticed.. you said up to 5500... when you were on the dyno they hit your rev limiter... does your motor seriously rev limits at 5500??? ... both my cars top out in the 6's - if i remember right, peak HP is about 58 and peak tq is about 45

I have a real crazy idea as to what i wanna do... but i gotta do it before i tune

i wanna do the 2.3 cam swap, get the GM Supercharger, but i wanna see if i can put a clutch on the pulley simular to an AC Clutch, and set it to shut off when the turbo i wanna put in spools up (so that the turbo charged air isnt constricted by how fast the belt is moving)...and i know i need to do several other things so the motor can handle it...

so i wanna learn everything i can about modding the 2.4

This guy had a twin-charged 2.4l, you might be able to get some information from him about doing the GM charger and turbo....

I think as long as you have HP tuners , the appropriate credit & the resources to get to him he's willing to HELP you learn how to do it yourself for free. idk, just the way I interpreted it.

It's 2 credits to license your vehicle (49.99 each credit) if you want someone else to do it, otherwise it's gonna be 500-650 depending on which HPT you get.....

Reality Check!!!![/v]

1st --- post the dyno to show us your "robbed power"

2nd --- you're car is listed as stock

3rd --- if its stock, your not that lean

4th --- if you were that lean the engine would be misfiring, not running. 17.1:1 is the edge of the lean limit to fire.

5th --- if you were that lean, there would be a MIL light and codes.

Everyone needs to learn that widebands: whether they are your's, your friend's, or a dyno shop's, are not the be all end all for measuring A/F ratio.
They are very sensitive devices that need to be properly calibrated to be correct. Unless you have a certified calibration sheet, the 1st thought you should have is "is this wideband really correct?". This is because they are basically delicate and easy to break or contaminate and therefore, very likely to read wrong.
Its far more likely the dyno wideband had a good bout with a muscle car with leaded fuel and cheesy octane boosters just before your car was tested. This equals damaged O2. Also most shops are too cheap to replace them regularly or even when needed. Furthermore, its even in their interest to give you a bad reading so that you will spend the $600 they want to tune.

1st I'm not gonna give em $600 to do something I can learn to do myself.

2nd I don't know how to post the dyno. Never tried, never had an intrest in it

3rd Yes the motor is stock, wait RK Sport coil conductors, not really a engine mod.

4th I don't really give a $hit if its that lean or not I asked for help from someone experienced w/HP tuners not someone to explain why there is nothing wrong w/my car

5th none of the lights in my guage cluster are reliable I ran around w/no coolant & 2 quarts of oil in the car for a couple blocks & wait...no lights, so that doesn't mean a damn thing.

I appreciate that you may be trying to help but If you're not gonna help teach me to use HP tuners please direct your comments elsewhere. Hell PM me but in this thread I'm looking for experienced HP Tuners.

Wow.....

Protomec is right on all counts.

If I were you, I'd put that $600 into something that makes sense (like a bank).

If you want to learn about what HP Tuners can do for a J-Body, you're in the wrong friggin forum. The tuning forum has plenty of info (and misinformation) that you can SEARCH for.

Have fun wasting money on something you don't need.

You've already totally missed the point.

to "2nd" -- I couldn't care less about your car or dyno sheets. The reason for posting them is SO YOU CAN LEARN what you are really looking at when you see them.

to "4th" --- The 1st thing you need TO LEARN is how to tell what is incorrect and why, Only then can YOU LEARN what you need to do to correct it. Mostly you NEED TO LEARN that if its not broken DON'T FIX IT. Making changes to something that is running correctly will only make it run incorrectly.

to "1st" --- You can't do it yourself. The point of your post, by your own admission, is to find someone else to do it for you. The point of my reply was in one part to tell you that your "dyno shop" is also... very definitely... not capable of doing it either. And because of that, you NEED TO LEARN how to tell the difference.

But then again, hey, what would I know?

Protomec: Obviously you don't know how to read because I never, not one time asked anyone to tune my car for me only to show me the ropes of the program. Meaning show me how to do it myself. I don't wanna learn how to tune just for my own car. I know of several car that definitly NEED tuning, like my friends '02 LS Sport Coupe on Boost, who has already blown one motor due to a poor tune. However I guess I have to post every single reason why I want to learn to use HPT before I post on this website. Sorry I didn't include all of my personal business. Wanna know my shoe size too?

Mr. Pute: I posted in this forum because I wanted LOCAL, meaning in my region, close to me, to help me with the program not somebody in fu˘kin Cali who I can't talk to face to face. If you must know I'm not tuning or driving my car until I finish installing my turbo kit. So much for not needing it huh?

ONCE AGIAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR "HELP" BUT IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA HELP ME WITH HP TUNERS THEN DON'T POST IN THIS THREAD. WhinninZ thank you for being the only one to answer the thread and not be a egotistical "know-everything" We will talk when I buy the program.

yea... this has turned in to a typical thread...

there are two ways to talk to someone and insults makes your point, however valid it may be, look very invalid...

All Stikman wants is to learn how to use HP tuners, because there isnt a strong j-body performance ring in South East Virginia... its basically us. I am an ASE Certified Mechanic, and im also a computer Science major, so if someone taught me to use HP tuners or i took a course, i feel i could master it pretty easily.... but as for my cars... im not tuning my car until i get my twin charger setup complete, and considering im going Axles back and building everything up correctly, its gonna be a little while, and im gonna have to rely on several of the more experienced 2.4 engine builders on the org for assistance on more of the custom aspects of the build. So ultimately i have plenty of time to learn.

As for the running lean issue, it was that that made the dyno shop suggest HP Tuning to him, which put the idea in his head to want to learn the software... so they are connected that way but not related.

Also if anyone remembers Paco Loco on here from years back... the same dyno shop dynoed his cavalier to 310 WHP. and i know several other people around here that trust the integrity of that particular dyno shop.

Stikman's dyno was around 110, for a stock eco 5 speed i'd expect about 130ish whp ... and they told him the power loss was due to runing lean.
