Gettin a turbo set-up need some help
Tuesday, November 25, 2008 8:08 AM
ok so as some of you know ive been planing on doing a turbo set up on my 2200 as of now i know i want to use a gt28 turbo due to the fact that it spools up pretty fast and thats what i am looking for and thats about it. i am doin a lil research seeing as the build will start in early 09. i would like to know what all i need to build it up. i did a few searches and i plan on running 5lbs at first on bone stock motor and then when i get it built i want to run 16 lbs. things i know im getting are: turbo timer, boost controller, air fuel controller, HPT, wide band o2, and a higher output fuel pump at first and then getting weisco pistons with eagle rods and p&p the head. was wondering what else i need to finish it up. i need to know what kinda exhaust i need, what manifold is best, injectors, spark plugs, fmic, etc...... any help would be much appreciated i would like to start picking up parts soon and hopefully starting before the year is out but shooting for early 09 so that when the spring comes i will have all set up and ready to be my DD. any comments on how i can achieve all this would be great.

P.S. i know an eco would be better yes yes but i plan on getting a z24 in the spring and im gonna s/c that one and have this one turboed.

Thanks everyone for your input
Scott

taking straight from the boost sticky

Sticky wrote:The GENERAL list for a turbo'd J is this:

Turbo (generally a T3 or T3/T4 will do)
Wastegate (Internal or external)
Manifold
Turbo downpipe Flange
Bolts for turbo and downpipe flange
Downpipe
Braided oil lines with fittings
2.5" Pipe for charge pipes
Connectors and clamps for pipes
BOV and flange
FMU (I'd go cartech adjustable personally)
Bigger Injectors (if you plan to run over 6lbs of boost)
Inline/In tank pump
Boost controller (I'd go Greddy Profec)
MSD-DIS 2 (To turn back timing if you want anything over 6bs really)
TB Plenum
Lots of misc vaccum hose
Rubber Fuel lines for FPR
Oil and oil filter (for the obvious reason)
Gaskets
Gasket sealer
Air filter
Intercooler (optional, but worth it)
Some spare metal brackets for custom mounting the Intercooler
Misc bolts (self tapping), and Nut/bolt combos
Gauge pod
Boost Gauge, EGT gauge (optional but smart to have one)
(If you have a profec boost controller the boost gauge is unnecessary as its built in)

pistons and rods for the bottom end and you could go as far as getting a high flow oil pump too. head get bigger valve, 1.6 roller rockers, ls1 hybrid lifters, crane pushrods, and a reground cam.

search more the info is out there.

your going to spend so much money boosting a 2.2 that you could spend half of it and have way more fun with 2.4 or eco.

read the boost forum, its there for a reason. it will answer your questions. to get your head done, you need to take it to a machine shop.

If your going to get a 2.4 and s/c it then I wouldn't bother boosting the 2200. Keep it stock for a DD and dump your money into the 2.4. Just my 0.02. Need help let me know.

Don't bother with the head. What sort of power are you looking for, or are you just doing it to do it.

im lookin to make 250 hp and torque is up in the air but something tells me that wont happen. i plan on running at most on the engine 20 lbs and was looking into maybe a bigger turbo to accommodate the top end and higher rpm ranges i was gonna see on the head when its all done but idk if i want to do all that to the head. still searching for a turbo kit that doesnt break my back in cost lol. all in all i want a solid 13 second car as a daily driver. also only want to run 10-13lbs on it daily and only up it to see what i can get out of it.

Well dont cheap out on getting boost or it will leave you on the side of the road calling someone for a lift. Hahn makes a good kit, did you look into that?

ya also looked into this one as well http://importperformanceparts.net/imports/turbospec_cavalier.html the t25 extreme kit is lookin pretty good seeing as how im a fan of garrett and heard bad things about the mitsu turbo but from what im hearing the 15g holds up well on the cavy so im thinking about that. i was planning on buying a set up off of ebay not for the turbo and waste gate and stuff just for all the necessary piping and fmic and manifold and then buying a gt3071 or a t25. any ideas on that what my best course of action would be? and if youve ever seen anyone use the t25 set up?

Re: Gettin a turbo set-up need some help

T25 will spool pretty fast, and limit power options. Should be ok. I would try to find a kit that has everything, turbo, pipes, ic, fuel management, ect. But thats just me.. OR get all the parts + IC and take it to RD Fabs for the pipe work.

i saw on ebay the one kit has everything but said it needs fitting to my car but im unsure on the turbo it says its a t04e t3/t4 turbo think it would be a good idea to pick that up and if the turbo is poop just buy another turbo?

avoid ebay turbos

to ever make 250 you have to do work to the head. at least port and polish and valves.

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 6:55 AM
ya i know that. right now im focused on running 12s or 13s and what ever power will get me there will make me happy lol. i will do the head last most likely since that will be the most expensive piece and with out that done im prob lookin at 14s.

Your going to need bigger than a t25 to reach 12's. And a good chunk of money..

Maybe the best thing to do would be search the boost forum for 2200s that made that power your looking for. I wasn't looking for those times when I was building my car.

12's your going to need like a t3/t4 60trim and a fully built 2200. ahah thats what im doing and im almost there with my build.
