Every time it rains or I wash my 92 Cavalier coupe the inside fills up with water; it is a lot like the great flood. I pulled out all of the interior and it is coming from the front, along the left side firewall. Is this a "common" Cavalier issue? Where is it really coming from?

Theres a little dimple on the firewall just below where the bonding agent is. Get in touch with
jonathan. He had the same thing happen to his car. Its easiest to hit him up on AIM. Tell him I sent you to him if he has any issues. <br>

Hmmm, maybe this is what's wrong with my car... Everytime I wash it or whatever, the drivers side floor is all wet. <br>
I also experienced this problem, and I am afraid what I will find once I pull up and replace my carpet (which I won't do until all the leaks are gone!).
I think found the major source under the cowel on the driver's side of the car, right where the hood release cable runs through. As I dug around, I found that the seam seal had dried up and pulled away from the metal. As chunks of seam seal broke away, I found a hole rusted through bigger than my thumb that was acting like a funnel to pour water down the inside of the inner firewall to the interior floorboards. The area was hard to reach, but I removed what I could, ground it out with a Dremel tool, coated it with a rust neutralizing product called Corroless from Eastwood company, and then sealed it with fiberglass patch material. It's not the prettiest of jobs, but it seems to work. I think I may have another spot or two elsewhere though, because I still have a minor leak. I think the only sure bet is ripping apart the whole cowel area, removing all the seam seal, patching any rusted spots, and then reapplying the seal. Hope this helps!

You are 100% correct.
I took an hour or so off today and totally striped out everything to find that the seams are in fact coming apart. There is a rust hole about the size of a quarter but it seems that mine is a little worse because the car has been hit in the front qtr years ago. I really need new carpet after this ordeal!

Glad my problems can be of assistance to someone else. I would recommend to anyone that is getting water on the front floorboards to remove the cowel, get in there and remove all the seam seal (because I think they used real crap on our J's), remove any rust, patch if necessary, and then reseal. This should do the trick. Also make sure you don't have areas rusting where the windshield mounts. I had my windshield replaced and we discovered rust that was eating at the lower A-pillar area. That was then fixed before they put the new windshield in. That could also contribute to leakage.

I'm having the same problem with my 93 Z24. I read a thread on this quite some time ago called "cleaning the gutters" and I bookmarked it but I can't find it anymore. Can someone please explain exactly what/where the cowl is and how to remove it? I was thinking of patching it up and spraying rubber undercoating over the patched area. Does anyone have photos of the area in question?
The cowl is the vented area between your hood and windshield there are some screws on the top you can see be carefull when taking this off because it is easy to mis the bolts on the underside and break the cowl screen i have done this more than once. <br>

under the cowl,in the "gutter" there are 2 drains one on each side,drives side is easy to find and clean out,but the passanger side is a little harder to find and clean out.The passager side drain gets clogged up sometimes,just clean it out and it will drain out better.

How do you pull the wiper arms of their posts, they seem imposible to remove. Is the seam visible by just looking down the cowling cavity because I look down there through the slots and don't see anything. Thank you much: Angelljr
