Thanks

Its not to bad. There is 4 bolts if i remeber correctly. They are bolted to the ignition module. Probably be good idea to have the module tested while you have the coils off.
Mike-
How did you know that the coil packs went bad?

The shop the car is at said one of them was bad. They tested everything. They wanted 340 to change them out. This is on a buddy of mines car. I have done headgaskets on 2.2 Turbo Mopars and Have done all the work on my 91 Vette. The shop said you have to undo the front motor mount and roll the engine forward is this true. I want to save this guy some money so we are going to do it ourselves.

No you don't have to do all that. Just crawl up under it and unbolt the old one and put the new ones on. I changed mine a few months ago and didn't have any trouble with it.
Don't ever go back to that shop again. I would be afraid to even pass a car they worked on while driving for fear of something falling off or blowing up. Some people just shouldn't be in the garage. Period.
Replace the coils, still runs on two cyclinders. It was very easy to do by the way. So what are the tale tell sings of a bad ICM in one of these?

Well...

this is a fairly good one.

The waste spark coil relies on a good current path through 2 plugs. Sometimes the current will find an alternate path if one of the plug wires is faulty, but not always. In short, check both coil wires and plugs connected to that coil. Honestly, if that coil pack and module are working, you should be able to remove both spark plug wires from the coil, crank the car, and hear a loud "snap snap" as current arcs from one coil tower to the other. If you try this and hear the correct sound, look elsewhere for the source of the problem.

Hey, isn't the ICM part of the coil pack on Sunbirds?

Anyone know if they are one unit?

2.2 coilpacks and ICM are seperate, 2.0s use one unit.

I recently replaced both coil packs on my '92 2.2 cavalier, but I distinctively remember replacing both coil packs on my '89 2.0 cavalier for 38.00 bucks a piece plus 99.0 for labor + tax. Some mechanics will tell you that the coil packs can't be individually replaced without replacing the whole ignition assembly and thats to their advantage. Angelljr

Ah-Ha!! Could you please please please
tell me exactly what Coils I need to buy? I've been getting the run-around from every person that I've spoken to since this whole thing started. I haven't a clue what to do or where to go.

Thank you,
