Engine Swap
Monday, April 18, 2005 7:55 AM
Is there another engine that will mount up in the 91 Cavalier? I am buying a car with a 2.2 and a rebuilt from Advance is 1350.00 and I dont really want to spend that much just on a rebuilt engine.

Thanks

2.2 , 3.1. Take your pick. If you got the mechanical knowledge, why not just go to the junkyard and pick up a 2.2 or a 3.1? They're a dime-a-dozen and you can just pick yourself up a rebuild kit from somewhere. Maybe Mr. Gasket or something.

Ok here is a question for all of you swap savvy kind of guys.

If I swap to the 3.1 V6 what all do I need to change. Engine Transmission ECU?.......is there more than that or does that do it........I dont know a whole lot about doing a swap so I just want a rough estimate of what I would be looking at for parts/money involved

Use the search function for God's sake! This has been talked about to death. But here's the link anyway:

This site has made a complete tutorial

If you have an Automatic you'll need the tranny and corisponding computer. If you have a 2.2L rather than a V6 then you're also going to need the wiring harness I believe.

if ur putting in a 3.1 ull need all the 3.1 mounts, compt, wiring harness, and the engien and tranny. if u want it to be a project, buy a 3.1 and buy the top end of a 3400 and make a hybrid. there way faster and better, the 3400's are like ouuta grand am gt, alero, impalas, and so forth

best off buying a wrecked 2.8/3.1/3.4 and swaping all you need from there.

OK, you got my attention. Looked at some of the web pages out there for a 3400 swap, but it looked a bit too complicated for me and there's no way I'm taking my AC out. This hybird sounds cool though: Got any more details on that?

That website that I posted above has almost every detail you could want. Otherwise, you could do a search, or head to the 660 forums (link on the Domestic Crew page).

Hey Arch, been following your engine thread. Are you considering a hybrid?

He got a sweet deal on a better motor, a 3.1 turbo out of a Grand Prix. But this is the website I posted:

http://www.domesticcrew.com/

"3X00 Install" Tells you how to install a V6, and the parts you'll need.
"Hybrid" is a step by step guide to build the 3400/3100 mentioned here.

Yeah. I checked it out - very cool!
I just ordered a header for my 2.2, but since it's my daily commuter - I plan on taking my time with the engine rebuild/upgrade. I'm still kicking around the idea of making a hybrid out of a 2.2, but haven't done my homework yet.

After all the trouble I had with my girlfriend's sunbird, I'm leary of turbos though.

If built right, nothing to be leary about... don't let one bad experience ruin something forever.

I sure that 3.1 turbo will be sweet, but I haven't heard of any decent 2.2 turbos.
Re: Engine Swap

I don't know that anyone's actually turbo'd the 2.2. I thought about it, but I'm a big fan of torque, so I'm thinking up an engine swap instead.

a lot of the third gen guys have turbo'd the 2.2 and had pretty good results and there 2.2 isnt that diffrent from ours.

Its a little different from my engine, since its TBI, which makes everything more difficult.

But to Pearlchaser, just realize that its going to be quite pricey to turbo your 2.2, and most of the parts for it will have to be custom made.

OK, now I really am stealing this thread:

F@&$# it! This is what I need . . .

3800 GTP

Did they ever make this for manual? If not, is it even possible to convert this to a manual?
Re: Engine Swap

ooh, that's sexy... But I don't think anyone has successfully swapped a 3800 into an early J yet. Tyrin will probably know, since he knows pretty much everything... But any engine can be made to work with a manual transmission, it'll just cost some money.

Right now, I'm just a quirky guy restoring a slightly-sporty compact . . . but if I were to drop this baby in - I'd have a true muscle car!

Started out just wanting to restore my old beat-up cavy, but now that she's cornering like a Porsche and rumbling like an old-school Mustang - I'm craving more horses! Sound familiar?

How are you going to do a 2.2 hybrid? 2200 head maybe? It really wouldn't be a hybrid because the 2.2/2200 uses the same block.

Pearlchaser wrote:I sure that 3.1 turbo will be sweet, but I haven't heard of any decent 2.2 turbos.

Do a search in the reg for 2nd gen 2.2 turbos, you'll find at least two.

Do an MPFI swap. Less than $100 if you do it yourself, then you won't have any issues.

Guess hybrid is the wrong word. I was thinking about swapping 90 2.2 parts for newer, better components - like the camshaft. Maybe grinding down the pistons heads, using total compression rings, etc.

I'll do some research. Thanks for all the input. (This site rocks!)

of course, you guys always forget the quad 4 motors.

i have one swapped in my 87 sunbird, and its making 171 hp at the wheels with just an intake and header. 230hp on the nitrous.
