Whats the difference?

I was just wondering what the difference between a 3100 V6 and a 3.1 V6 does one have more power then the other or what?

3100 came out in the Chevy's in 95, it has a different intake manifold, allowing more air, not sure about the other differences, maybe OBD-II, which was fully introduced in 96, but had the hook ups IIRC in 95, but it wasnt quite the same, only reason i say this, is that a normal OBD-2 hook up didnt work for my mom's 95 Lumina which had a 3100. the 3.1 was what the Cav, old Lumina etc had back pre 95, which was OBD-1

there's basically no difference.

Completly wrong.
3100s have a roller valve train, better flowing heads, intake plenum runners. All of this stuff creates quite a power gain over a gen 2 3.1v6.
3100s after 2000 have the same heads as the 3400. Most people who do engine swaps in J cars these days go for the 3400 .. it will put about 160hp and 200 lbs of torque at the front wheels with no engine work.

better heads, hydralic roller cam, roller tip rockers, better intakes, cast aluminum oil pan, 4 bolt mains, windage tray, higher compression.

the 3100 is around 160hp, were the 3400 is actualy up around 180. think of the 3100 more as a 3400 with a smaller bore, rather than a 3.1l with some better stuff.

my bad you guys, I always thought they just took the same engine and slightly updated it with a larger bore. mines the 3100 and I never worked on the 3.1 before.

Isnt the 3100 that came out 95ish a SFI? while the 3.1 is a MPFI?

Yes but this is only a ECU programming issue not engine related, and it does not provide any performance gain. SFI only works on them at low rpms anyway below 2000rpm. When you get the motor really turning it switches back to bank firing like the MPFI always did before. SFI just basically gives a smoother/fuel effiecient idle.
