Another header question
Monday, June 13, 2005 9:27 AM
I've already searched the forums and cant find anything

I'm trying to find someone that sells a header kit (including downpipe) for a 2.0 OHC MPFI (93 sunbird), also, are they the same on a Cavi?

That 93 motors is the 2.2 MPFI motor... Yes the 95-97 2.2 Header will work.

Thanks, but my car has a 2.0, not a 2.2 (I'm not sure If I completely understand)

All sunbirds have the 2.0 OHC motor and all 4cyl cavy's have a 2.2 OHV motor, the two are completly diffrent and nothing is interchangeable between them. There is no aftermarket header for the 2.0 OHC, if you want one you have to make it yourself or have someone custom make you one.
I'd just turbo the thing

Are you serious? I thought the newer Birds came with the 2.2.... I swear Ive seen a few in the Jyard with a 2.2, anyways thats pretty dumb that GM would put in a more powerful 2.2 in one car, and put in the older 2.0 in the same frame and year.

If you have that 2.0 motor, swap over a DOHC head and add alot of boost to it.

Sunbirds always got the crappy 4 cylinder motor. They did on the other hand receive the v6 in the later years in the higher models.

I second that notion. and no the sunbird never had the 2.2. in fact the sunbird choices were limited to the 2.0-4cyl, 2.0-4cyl turbo and the 3.1 v6. swap the thing and build a turbo'd hybrid.

Maybee whan I have a spare car, the money, and a place to do it....if that time comes...than hell ya i'll turbo it, but none of those 3 apply to me yet.

If the computer and wiring harness are compatable (more work if not) , I suppose I could swap the engine fairly easy if I had the money, and place. Don't know how the old turbo would hold up though, or if the internals can handle a boosted head swap as opposed to an entire engine replacement. How much does one of those engines cost anyway, and whats the specs on em.

Oh ya, apparently Mantapart makes a header for my car, but the web site and description suck, and it runs around $200. Either way, I have to eventually do something about my exaust, I keep getting pulled over. Got a warning ticket yesterday. I wan't the header to counteract the flow retstriction of a high flow cat I need to install to quiet the thing down.

Don't order from Mantapart... I'm yet to hear a good review about them. And actually, contrary to popular belief, a cat does not restrict your exhaust flow unless it's clogged. If it's clogged you can get a cheap high flow version off eBay for next to nothing.

If I were you, I'd head to a local muffler shop and ask them how much it would cost to build you an exhaut. Get it about 2.5" that way if you want to turbo it in the future the only thing you'll have to do is add a turbo manifold instead of having to get an entire new exhaust bent up again.

The 2.0 and 2.0 turbo share a lot of parts, only the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and pistons are diffrent, you also need to swap the wiring but thats no big deal once the motor is out, do a search for "2.0 FAQ" and you'll find my FAQ that tells you all about turboing your car, there isnt much about the DOHC head swap cause I wrote it a while ago when we first just started to look into that on the org. Now I know tons on it and it will all be in a updated version of my FAQ I'll post later.

basically if you're going to turbo anything anyway, you're gonna have to have pistons that are better capable of handling it . like you said they share a lot cause it's the same engine. so if you're going to upgrade to turbo either way is fine, turbo'ing the 2.0 or swapping in the turbo. if you swap in the turbo'd engine it'd be less work just be sure to get the computer. and like wraith said a better suited exhaust.

tho I know you said you weren't up to any of that for now. just 2cents

So Mantapart sucks.............I'm screwed...I wan't a headder dammmmit.

I'm planning on running spray instead of boost anyway.. I can only justify putting so much money into that car. I'm actually a trained mechanic, so I wouldn't have any problem doing anything mentioned, I just live in a damn apartment right now. it sucks.

I also make over $12 and hour...But I just moved into this damn apartment, so money is low. Apartment buildings suck.

No one around here does performance exaust. The shops around here suck. I did find a guy that said he'd do the coustom exaust work cheap if I could find a header and put it on myself, but if mantapart is a bad idea, than I might have to forget it. Plus I'm not crazy about driving down the freeway (or town) the an open header, but I would if I could find one.
