welding on strut housing

Would it be possible to arc a strut housing without damaging the internals? I'm not sure what the effect of the heat and electricity would have on the internals...
The welding would be towards the lower half of the housing.

Good luck man......find out what its filled with and find the new pressure at the welding temperature......I got money on there gonna explode.

I hope not, it's our only chance for J-body Teins on the IRS Although, I can do it without the welding if absolutely necessary, it's actually pretty simple.

Sometimes you can damage internals, but the worst problem you're likely to have is cooking the oil. Once its been overheated, its pretty useless and cavitates real quick. There are quite a few "weld-your-own" struts out there, where all you have to do is weld ears on the bottom of the housing to fit any spindle you want, but, they're designed for that. Taking a strut, cutting something off, then welding on new tabs can be done, but you need to do it slowly and let the housing cool completely. Using a wet rag or some other type of heat sink will help too.

Just make sure you use a MIG or tig and just do small 1 2 second spot and then let it cool. And like said above keep a wet rag on the parts of the strut that are around the weld.

It is kinda dangerous but if you are using the right tools and just doing tiny spot welds at any time your probably gona be fine.
