Changed the rear drums on an 03 and....:( whats wrong?
Sunday, March 25, 2007 8:17 PM
We just installed the rear drums on my brothers 03 sunfire and I think we have a few problems. I dont know if anyone has ever changed them themselves but compared to other drums it was pretty easy however. After we changed them we began to think theres a problem. We changed the pads, and the drums and when everything was put back together on both sides we pulled the e brake and it went all the way up! So we do it again; expecting that it would self-adjust but nothing.

The problem is that it is as if the brakes are worn down when there brand new. The parking brake cannot hold the car on an incline. So im wandering, what could we have done wrong or is there something that needs to be adjusted for the 03's?

Have you tried spreading the adjuster using a screwdriver through the backing plate?

The BEST way to adjust them is to take the wheels back off.

Pull wheel off
Pull drum off
Adjust shoes outward using the adjuster
Slide drum in place, spin the drum. If it feels like it is just barely rubbing on the pads, problem solved. If it's not barely rubbing, repeat process until it is.
