best way to get old paint off brakes?

I was just wondering what the best and quickest way is to get my old paint off of my calipers and drums? it's flaking off in some spots but in others it's still on pretty good. Please help me out here and let me know what I can do. Thanks!

Larry.

Brake cleaner will do it. soak the drums in it and just keep the calipers wet in the stuff and the paint will just flood right off in about 5 minutes once it gets all the way through the paint.

I was going to suggest "Paint Remover" from your local hardware store, that is what it is actually called in the Home Painting Department at Canadian Tire (not the automotive paint section)....i used that stuff on my IDI cover before i painted it flat black, within second the stock grey stuff was peeling right off. With the help of a plastic bristle brush scrub away at the paint(the paint remover burns through the bristles so you have ot be willing to sacrifice the brush, and work quickly...for me the total scrubbing time on the IDI cover was 5-7 minutes, just keep dipping the brush in water and it will help slow the burning) ...

When I was painting my rear drums, I prepped them by blasting them with glass beads. Probably not a good idea for calipers, but worked nicely on the drums.

Actually, that'll work just fine for calipers too, but you need to make sure you tape up the critical surfaces very well. I usually use a couple of layers of masking tape, then a piece of duct tape, because that will stand up the best.

Whatever method you use, if you want the new paint to stick well (I'm assuming that's your reason for getting the old paint off), make sure you really clean the surface of any solvents/cleaners/oils before you paint it. I think a lot of people make that mistake. They clean them down with a solvent, but don't take enough care to get all of the solvent off before painting, so the paint never completely grabs the metal.
