Tensioner will have to be adjusted initially to get things to work right.
On adjusting it, have the brake drum off of the car and adjust the tensioner until it just starts to make contact with the drum.
Install the drum on the hub and spin it. You should be able to hear a slight amount of drag the hub but not so much that it will restrict free movement of the hub.
Adjust as necessary on both sides and try to make it as even as possible on both sides so activation of the shoes to the drums is exactly the same.
Hope this helps.

No, you won't be able to get the drums on and off to adjust them.

As an additional tip, after you get the wheels torqued back on, make a few firm stop while going backwards. That will help adjust the drums and will also help equalise the stopping power of the drums.

que??

I thought Misnblu summed it up rather well.

I agree with your tip, that is how to get it to "self adjust" although I have never been REALLY succsessful at getting it to work.

That was in response to jon patzman's question about the e-brake being up.

As for the self adjust, I usually have to do up to six firm stops to get it adjusted. (Gotta love the neighbors look when you back up quickly, jam the brakes, pull forward and doing again several times.)
