Sounds like your VSS is malfunctioning somewhere. Could be the sensor, could be a wire, could be the ECM. Again, is the check engine light on? If not, it might be a problem from the ECM to the cluster. I'd tend to discount the cluster being the problem since both things quit at the same time.
