So which is faster stock for stock a 90's z24 with a 3.1 5speed or an 03+ base model with a 5speed? Im guessing the z24 is probably a better car but which is faster?

3.1 2nd gen VS Eco 3rd gen...... IDK.... It might be close but if I had to bet... my money would be on the Eco.... but I'de be crossing my fingers...
3.1 VS 2.4...... LD9 for sure.
Somebody has to have or know where to find the stock 1/4 mile times for these cars..... or better yet... have time slips of both drivin by the same driver.
the eco would beat the 3.1, but going up against a 89-92 Sunbird GT, the GT would kick some a$$.

My understanding has always been this for stock J-bodies
2nd gen 4-cylinders (except the Sunbird GT) are pretty closely matched with 3rd gen LN2s
3.1 V6 2nd gens, although a bit faster than their 4-cylinder brethren, still arn't as fast as a 3rd gen LD9 or L61
LD9's and L61's are pretty closely matched but the LD9 is a little faster (although a good driver in a L61 could beat a bad driver in a LD9)
The 2nd Gen Sunbird GT's are faster than all of them.
As far as how big or little the differences are... I'm not sure.... but the above has always what I've understood to be true.

94-97 2.2
2200 sfi (barely over 2.2)
2.8mpfi
3.1mpfi
2.4(by a hair over the 3.1)
eco (by the slightest hair over the 2.4)

bluedevil, there are 2 things you need to know. 1) Austin knows his stuff. I encourage you not to to get confrontational with him unless you want to get owned. 2) The mid-90's Z24 would own your car stock for stock. It had a 2.4 litre I4 that produced 150 hp and 160 tq and was mated to a Getrag 5 speed manual. That car was faster and more powerful than you car.)

Thanks for the backup Connor. Mine had a 3.1 with a Getrag. Ran a 16.2 while flat foot shifting at 1 mile of elevation with a crappy 60' time (It was a test & tune, and they don't prep at all). Pretty sure it had a high 15 up here.

stock eco cavis have ran stock low 15s at sea level with a good driver so itd run a low 16s here

you won't see anything close to 15's at this altitude until you go forced induction on the cavi. best a 2.2 has run out here is 16.4 and he had minor bolt-ons and has front passenger seat out. that was obz in his cobalt lt.)

Ya i know i said here i'd run a low 16, at sea level id run a low 15 im not sure about this but isnt the cavi quite a bit lighter than the balt i know we were talking and the balts 2.2 has like 8 more horses than the cavis but isnt the wieght to power ratio a little better for the cavi

I have raced a stock 2003 Z24 cavi (i think) and an 05 cavi with I/H/E when I had only my intake and catback and beat both. But honestly blue, If you can break out of the 17's... Be happy

for what it's worth, how well maintained the 3.1 is would play a big part of it.
a buddy of mine had a 93 z24 with the 3.1 and a 5spd. i ran him in my sedan (eco, 5spd) and it was always a pretty close race. i'd pull him up top though.
How much slower would a Vert be than a hard top When it comes to 3.1 V6 2nd gens?
Because I can outrun my Dads Sunbird vert with a 3.1 auto like it's sitting still.
The verts are heavier due to reinforcing but not heavy enough to cause a 'major' setback in performance

how would a cavi do with a hahn stage two running 8 lbs vs the ss/sc or even the ss/tc??

Against the ss/sc i think it would be close, could go either way. Against the ss/tc, the hahn stage 2 would get owned unless you have a lot done to your engine.

problem, and this is from personal experience. the 2200SFI is slower than the 2.2OHV. and the 2.0 was alot quicker for me than my 2.2 has been.

Unless you have one of each stock (no mods all OEM), at the track. one run each, same driver, same reaction time, etc. There really isnt any point argueing. There are just too many factors unless you base the results on the stock HP rating.
