I have a 2002 cavy w/2.2 ecotec, auto. replaced my axles with cobalt ss axles and now when i hit 78mph my dash lights up! does anybody know why? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
did you mean 88mph....thats when the flux capacitor kick in.
FYI, our stock axles are stronger than the cobalts.
Quote:
define "lights up".
Drive shafts shouldn't cause any electrical problems btw...

you put weaker axles into your car.....congrats

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
All i know is that i started having these problems right after putting the axles in. ABS light, TRAC light, and engine light comes on when i hit 76-78 mph.
I don't know how the axles could be weaker when their a 1/4" thicker than the stock axles.

I dont think he will ever break even the SS axles

Thicker doesnt mean its better. The type of metal is a big factor.
Ya, I think I read somewhere that the 2009 Cobalt SS is gonna have stronger axles and a better clutch....AND Brembo's on the front!!
Judging by ebay pictures, the cobalt axle doesn't have the gear tooth wheel that is needed for the abs sensor. Didn't you realize this was a potential problem when changing them, seeing as they look vastly different??? I'm surprised you made it past 3 mph.

I believe the Coblat/G5 uses a hub/WSS assembly like most of the other vehicles in the GM line up. If you dont have ABS its no big deal.

Uh, yes it is. ABS does
more than just pump the brakes during lock up.

Depends on the car.
Actually it just watches the wheel speeds and watches for one to slow down then drop speed quickly and is supposed to theoretically pump the brake before it actually even locks up. But it's about worthless to have a j-body and only have 3 channel ABS.
I never noticed any effect on my Cav as far as the ABS being disabled. Though on my GTP, i've noticed a few times that when there's an ABS fault that the variable assist power steering goes down to about nothing and makes the steering real heavy at low speeds. And the tire pressure monitor continously tells me that I have a tire with low pressure. You shouldn't have any of these problems in a J-body since they don't have any of that stuff.

If his car dint have ABS to start with then it doesnt matter that the new axles dont have the tone ring. Also if you dissable the ABS on a J it doesnt do dick to any of the brakes. Still function just as they did before, only without the annoying ass ABS going off when it shouldnt be. If you have an auto and it has traction then no tone ring would also dissable the traction control system.

Ok smartass,
1) 2002.
2) have you ever disabled your ABS before and ridden around and did some hard braking?

I have an '02 coupe, it seems just fine, if you aren't careful the rear wheels lock before the front but its all about knowing your car. I stop faster on ice without the ABS. Let me rephrase that... I actually stop, not speed up.
I'd rather drive an A than push a J...
Exactly. The car is fine, unless you're thrown into a situation where there is heavy braking, because then there's a chance to lock up one wheel much sooner than others (in my case, the front passenger was always first). The ABS does some proportioning while braking so it takes longer for you to lock a specific one up.
But yes, ice and sand are special cases

Well 2 20 min sesions on a local road course with slight rain and no ill effects at all. Car did exactly as it should have. Went straight, never locked them up, never became loose. ALso since im being a smartass when I was taking the GM brake training and assesment tests they made it very clear that if there were any fault in the ABS system and it were to be nonfunctional teh vehicle would behave as if it never had ABS. Did it ever occure to you that maybe there is something wrong with your car??? I had decent brakes on the front, properly adjusted rear brakes and new synthetic brake fluid. Drums got up to 350* and never had any fade. Never checked the front temps. Im even about to kill the ABS in my 98 as it annoys me more than it helps me. If you know what you are doing then you dont need ABS. Whenever I get around to it im going to replace the ABS BPMV with a distribution block from a non ABS car. I just dont like looking at the bulky module.
i deleted the ABS in my 2000 when i did the ecoswap i hate ABS anyways so why search for a new engine harness when my swap car was already ABS delete
