Problems with the sunfire
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 4:08 PM
Well tonight My car starting leaking oil, BADLY. I was about 2 minutes from crappy tire so I went and got some oil and put in it to get me home. Well in about 5 minutes I was in the canadian tire store it leaked a puddle of oil about 8 inches in diameter. I didn't hit anything, and it didn't leak before, it just started leaking out of no where.
I'm guessing it's either the oil pan gasket, or the pan itself, because it's leaking when the car is shut off. It's my birthday today (just my luck) so I'm not even going to look at it tonight, I'll see if I can figure it out tomorrow sometime....

Yeah that's one of the things I was thinking as well, but even though it was leaking bad, I think it would have been puring out alot more if the drain plug was out, it could just be loose though.

When's the last time you changed the oil, or had someone change it for you? Could be possible that you've blown the filter off, just a guess.... can't really tell from my chair here.

Look to see if its coming from the oil sending unit. I have seen several leak really bad from where the wires plug in to it. A good sign that it is would be oil all over the plug and if you unplug it , the oil will be where the terminals are on the plug.

do you have the ln2/2200? if so, there was one time i was driving and saw a large puff of smoke from behind me. it trned out there's a mount very close to the oil filter, has three bolts, two of which were missing (i dont now how) and the last had three threads left, had come loose and punctured the oil filter. check the gasket on your oil plug, your oil filter, oil pressure sending unit and oil pan gasket. essentially, look for the highest point that has oil on it, which is where your leak is coming from.

Found the problem. Very small hole in the passenger side of the oil pan. It's not big by no means, I had the car running for about 20 minutes and there wasn't enough oil coming out to drip onto the ground, I cleaned it off and then I saw it coming out slowly. Is there a temporary fix for this that will get me until the weekend when I can swap oil pans?
