How to test fuel pressure?

How do you test the fuel pressure on a 1999 twin cam? Theres no shader test port. Haynes manual says you disconnect the "quick-connect" return line and slice a temporary line into which you then use a standard fuel pressure gauge. Where do I get the splice line?

Symptoms are intermittent hard starting ONLY when hot or warm (3-5 second crank time) and/or it starts, then stumbles, sometime dies. If it dies, it restarts fine. Then after you start it, it idles around 850 RPM then settles to 600, where it then seems to idle "weak" (like it is out of gas) There seems to be slightly less power driving. The problem is intermittent, but only when the engine is warm or hot. No SES light.

I suspect the fuel system, but I want to be sure, because I rather not throw parts at it. Thanks

that fuel line connector comes with the high dollar fuel pressure test kit. There are some tubing flare kits that can reproduce GM's fuel line quick connect hard line. I have one its made by snap-on. either find some one that has a pressure test kit of find someone that has the flaring tool and make up a test line. Your also going to need the gauge and t fitting to run rubber hose if you decide to make up a line.

Hot or warm? I'd suspect the coil packs not the fuel pump... unless you've got such a low amount of fuel, that the return fuel is warming up the pump enough to kill it. Haven't seen too many do that...

Can you just leave it sitting idling? When it dies, listen for the fuel pump to shut off three seconds after it dies. You should hear the FP relay under the hood click off, and if there isn't any sound coming from the pump in the tank, then that would be the problem. I have that issue right now, but it's not temperature related... happens all the time. The pump is old, brushes are worn (and aren't serviceable), so I'll be dropping the tank soon.
