i just Dont know guys but I think 220k has maybe taken its toll on my eco..
its been making this strange clicking noise near the timing chain area... like click, click, click ...... click click click........ click click click.... during idle... well its been doing this for a few days it started pretty quite and I barely noticed it.. some days it wouldnt do it at all and some days it would..
but now listen to it! to me it sounds like the timing chain.. but i dont know.. maybe just maybe its the tentioner..
just let me know if anyone has any ideas....
hope this isnt bad...
ive got 220K miles on her now... stock chain..
as long as it lasts till the end of march i dont care because im swapping in a lower mileage motor and saab turboing it...
I had the same noise..never tore the motor down..All I know mine ended up with nice silver flakes in the oil...And I still drove it like that for 50 thousand more KM...Then I put in a low km one..But it was still going...But sounds like could be tensioner..Keep me updated if you tear down the motor..
you got it man i sure will... i plan on rebuilding this motor for boost so ill be ripping it apart some time in the future.... i just hope it lasts till the end of the month...
The noise started in mine at 80 Thousand KM..And was gettin worse at 173 thousand KM..But I kept driving it like I stole it..
Bump
Just curious to know if the noise is still there? The reason I'm asking is because mines been making a noise too not the same noise, but seems to have a much softer noise now that it's warmed up in my state. I think mine might be the serpentine belt tensioner tho. Never changed mine and I've got 90,000 miles on it.
Might have to post my noise on here if you don't mind Slocav.

His timing chain snapped and has since replaced his motor.

Name that sound.
Here is the sound that my car has been making since this winter.....this is much milder than it was this winter as the temp was almost 75 today.
You can hear the noise inside the car if the music is off,but only at idle. Does it sound like the tensioner for the belt or does it sound more internal noises?

red rider sounds like the timing chain like mine.... not sure tho. sounds simular to mine... if it gets any worse then its the chain. and if its the chain i would change it ASAP...
The only reason I don't think it's the timing chain is b/c I've taken a solid screwdriver right in b/t the cams on the valve cover and didn't hear that noise. My father in law thought it was the tensioner for the belt. The sound doesn't seem to sound the same on the video as it does in person. It reminds me of my 89Z that had the bearings go out on the alt. It has a groaning bearing sound like something is lacking grease for some part on that side of the engine. I do have a problem with the timing chain but only when I start it up for the first time of the day or after the cars been sitting for a few mins and both times only last a min or 2 till oil finally hits the timing chain. I do plan on changing both chains and guides along with the chain oiler that gm messed up on.
