4.0 Aurora Northstar swap
Friday, January 08, 2010 7:46 AM
I know there was a lot of talk about the Cadillac 4.6 northstar engine in a cavalier and the complications and i was wondering if the Oldsmobile Aurora swap would be possible and i have done my research and there is nothing asked about it yet so i will ask could it be done. I mean the 4.6 northstar is 280 cubic inches and the aurora is only 244 cubic inches just 13 cubic inches bigger then the 3800 that have been swapped into numerous cavaliers

The 4.6 and 4.0 are physically the exact same size. So take what Rob did on his, and thats what u would have to do.

so pretty much pointless go with a 4.6

pointless all around now that its been done theres no real point in doin it robs is unique cause its the first and his car will always be 1 of a kind

a northstar swap is a pointless swap other then that cause the northstar doesn't really make much more power then a 3800SC and it can be swapped easier and the northstar is a dink to work on in a caddy not to mention a J body

this is not knock anything that rob did because i love robs car and everything about it true J body pioneer but really the swap on any other car is pointless

I looked into an Aurora a while ago... apparently those engines are considered to be the WORST Northstar around.... so I gave up on that idea... one guy even swapped an L67 into his Aurora to get rid of the Northstar...!

I wasn't aware any of the olds auroras ever came with a V8, thought they were all the 4.0 V6.

3.5L (AKA shortstar or mini northstar V6) or 4.0L Northstar V8

the newer model of aurora was called aurora 3.5 or aurora 4.0

Ok now what about the Alero, didn't that have a 4.0 also if memory serves i think you could get an alero with the eco too couldn't you i was thinking of Alero in the above post but somehow got it confused with the aurora.

The Alero came with a 3100 I think, 3400 V6, 2.4L and a 2.2 Ecotec. Never had a 4.0.

Where the hell did Alero come from? Oh figures... good ol' Bill. Thanks buddy.

The Olds AURORA came with the 4.0 V8 as in EIGHT!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadillac_Northstar_engine#L47

Your Welcome Lenko pal, yeah i got confused in my first post when everyone was talking about the olds aurora and then i mentioned the 4.0 V6 which didn't exist. Though they said the 4.0 was a V8, but when it came to the northstars i thought the V8 there was a 4.6 not a 4.0. Anyway come to find out the alero had some V6s but that Gm never made a 4.0 V6.

Maybe it was the 4.9 i was thinking of, because didn't some cadillacs have a 4.9.

see the specs on the 4.0L 250hp and 260ftlbs 3800SC is easier to swap in and makes 240 and 280 with a pully change you will make more power then a the LD8 and LH2 northstar engines

Yeah, duh@me it was actually ford that made the 4.0 V6 and the 4.6 V8 as well but i'm pretty sure gm did make a 4.5 V8 and a 4.9 at one point.

Yeah Brad almost forgot about that one, we had that in our blazer years ago man did that thing have the power. Also, didn't gm years ago have like a 4.1 digital either V6 or V8 they put in the cadillac fleetwood. By digital i mean digital fuel injection or electronic fuel injection whatever you want to call it.

yes Cadillac in the 80's had a 4100 v8 the 4.3 vortec was a nice engine until the epa got on them for the spider pop-it located under the intake that cause the emissions to be high same thing with the 5.7 vortec and yes cadillac also had a 4.9 ohv engine in the early 90's but steered away for it due to it being heavily underpowered compared to the northstar 4.6 and believe it or not the first electronic fuel injected engines was featured on the early 60's corvettes its been around awhile

Those were mechanical, not electronic.

no they were electronic but i was wrong they were not the first: The first commercial electronic fuel injection (EFI) system was Electrojector, developed by the Bendix Corporation and was to be offered by American Motors (AMC) in 1957
this is from wikapidia

The Corvette system was mechanical. there is a very good article about it here. This system was also available in the late 50s. I think also in 1957, but not positive.

bringing back a old thread cuz i think its worth more thought for all those hating on the aurora v8... it was the most winning engine in IRL history like 700hp at like 12k rpm+, this was of course very far from stock but also a very cool engine, make ur cavy sound like a Ferrari... so if u wanna dump 30k into ur cavy pls post pics haha, if i win the lottery (retirement plan) ill do so
