Music Hard drive
Tuesday, May 10, 2005 5:41 PM
My neighbor asked me the other day about a music hard drive for your car. Its not a headunit with a harddrive built in or one of those memory sticks. He was saying it was like an actual computer harddrive to store music that you can hook up to your radio. I think he said a company named Ominivox? made them....I was just wondering if any one has heard of these harddrives. I've been around audio for about 3 years but ive never heard of them. Of course im usually the last to hear about things. And I did a search here on the .org but found nothing. Any input would be great, thanks!

Yeah Kenwood has the music keg, which is basically a hard drive to store mp3s on. Not sure if that's what your friend was talking about or not but here's a link

Probably "Omnifi" which is made by Rockford Fosgate. www.woot.com sells them sometimes. It has a hard drive and can be set up with wireless network so you can download the songs over your wireless LAN directly into the car. The biggest disadvantage IMO is that it has to have its own separate control panel (like HU face plate) to pick songs. What i'd really like to see is one that integrates into the HU's changer controls and provides CD text, etc. Possible to make yourself if you are experienced with electronics but a lot of work and a lot of money. Better solution would probably be the Music Keg mentioned before, or a MP3 CD changer (I have a JVC head unit and JVC makes a 10-cd MP3 / WMA changer that is not too expensive)

Thanks for the help everyone. And PYRO thats exactly what he was talking about. He wanted something like that because he was telling me that between him, his wife, and kids he has around 4 to 5 thousand songs. So he figured something like that would be a great idea for his car. But do you think its worth the buy for something like that? I beleive he said he found it for $150 but i forget were.

Check out my webpage I have a pioneer HU with the CD-IB100 iPod interface. It charges the iPod while connected and you can control all of the iPod's functions from the HU.
