The manufacturer is the ONLY one who can tell you the BEST size.
I agree, opinions are not terribly worthwhile. However, personally testing the sub in different enclosures is the BEST way to find out what works best in your vehicle, for what you want it to do on the power at hand.
Manufacturer recommendations are just that - recommendations. I have yet to see a manufacturer-recommended enclosure end up being the "best" for what I wanted, be it SQ or SPL. It all depends on what your goals are. They are, however, a good place to start off from.

Whiteboy, you talk a lot but never seem to help. ever... at all...
I used to post here alot, but way too many people came in who *thought* they knew something, insulted everyone, and most of the knowledgeable people quit posting (including me). Surprise, surprise, things haven't changed.
I'm guessing that you've owned a 2500d or those Pioneer subs? Sure hope so, because if you haven't, then all you offered was baseless opinion. One step above worthless IMO.
Look up at Lanman's sticky. I see my name posted there. Maybe we should ask him why? You were around back then, you should remember why. I was a regular and DID offer a ton of help. Those days are done, and now I spend most of my time on RoE and CA where there are people with similar competitive interests. I also only post where I have personal experience or knowledge to add to the thread. 98% of the people who post here on j-body don't run SPL subs, 5kw+, or have 8 runs of 1/0 in their car. If someone needed help with a competition stereo, I'd post if I could help. But I don't see much of that here these days.
Reread what I posted. I've never played with an Orion 2500d or those Pioneer subs, but I've certainly played around with a box or 50 (in both SQ and SPL). That's damn valuable information that I posted. Gained by years of playing, building and competing. If you don't know reasons why I posted what I did, then you probably shouldn't be insulting me or offering any real help yourself.
Every vehicle is different, and every install is unique. That is why you cannot say that there is a "best" SQ, SQL or SPL sub, or a "best" amplifier, or a "best" enclosure for a specific subwoofer. There are way too many variables when it comes to car audio. We could run the same equipment, but what works best for me in my Cavalier may not work well for yours. I've personally seen differences as high as 4dB on the TL between cars of the same year, model, options, condition etc, running the EXACT same box and the EXACT same equipment. There are several accounts of similar things on Termpro, with people testing out CRXs and Explorers. How is a manufacturer-recommended enclosure going to work best in vehicles which don't even respond the same with the same gear???
I've had my 18" Stroker in 3 different vehicles, and the loudest boxes for each vehicle were COMPLETELY different. CV recommended enclosure for an 18d2 is 5.75cuft, tuned to 40Hz. I can tell you right here, people who have run Strokers would laugh at you if you recommended that enclosure. Including me. Going from a 5.75cuft box @40, to an 8cuft box in my explorer, both on 1600wrms, was like day and night. 10cuft only gained more and more on the mic (and in low-end response). 5.75cuft @40Hz not only sucked for SPL, but it wouldn't play below 35Hz. 5.5cuft@30Hz, however, was very, very tight, but quiet. Literally the complete opposite of my 10cuft boxes.
DD suggests 4cuft, 40Hz for their 9515. For pure SPL, my loudest score on the TL with a single 95 came from a 2.8cuft box, tuned to 44Hz. My best daily box has been just over 3.5cuft, tuned to 35Hz; in terms of SPL, the larger box destroyed the bigger boxes, not even close. Logic says otherwise, but there was no disputing the TL scores. Tuning that box to 40Hz completely destroyed all response under 30Hz (even in the 4-4.5cuft boxes I built). Not to mention that my two 150.1s produce enough power when strapped to launch a 95 cone in a high-tuned box. DD's recommendations are good for those who keep under RMS power. But there aren't many people with 95s who do that....but if you know what you're doing, they can survive double their rated power daily, and laugh doing it. My next box will be even smaller, with more port area.
I used to run my 2-12W6s in a 2cuft box, tuned to 32Hz in a 1984 T-bird. Originally had them in small, sealed boxes ALA JL's recommendation. Low-end was poor. Bumped box volume up 50% and it was a night and day difference (off ~300wrms a side). Went ported, 1st at 2.25cuft each, then to 2.75cuft each (both tuned to 24-25Hz; JL recommends 2.25cf, tuned to 30Hz), and the low-end improvement was dramatic just going up 0.5cuft a sub. Response was ruler-flat into the subsonics, and I managed to win a few trophies. Threw the same subs in my Festiva, and the "best" SQ enclosure in that car was different again (2cuft, tuned into the low/mid 20s). In the 3 years I ran W6s, not ONCE did the JL recommended box end up being the best for SQ. Results with their recommended enclosures were OK, but improvements could easily be made with little effect on power handling.
Then there is the Orion H2. Search through CA or Termpro to see what happens when you give an H2 rated power in the recommended enclosure. The recommended enclosures are too large and tuned too high to properly damp the cone at rated power. Reduce the volume, and lower the tuning, and your H2 will survive rated power no problem, and sound good doing it.
So how on EARTH can you pretend that the recommended enclosure will work equally well for all people, in all vehicles?????? You can't. At very best, the recommended enclosures are a good place to start. IMO, they are a compromise - decent response (in most vehicles) with decent reliability with rated power.
Is that enough "help" for you, JL?
Unholy out.
