Double Din in a 95-99 Cavalier (pics)

Did a lot research on this and found nothing but advice to swap a newer (2k and up) dash assembly. Stopped at a friends' shop yesterday for a single din kit yesterday and left with this:

Needed to remove some plastic in the back and below the hvac but that's a lot easier than swapping the dash or even relocating the hvac and deck positions and using the 2k+ bezel. I'm very pleased with the finished product.

Exactly how did you do this? I have been thinking about doing it to my 96 Z.

That is a fairly rare blue dash you have there.

I didn't do it myself. It was made for me and he would be happy to make more of them.

The deck is a DDX 271.

I have a 99 z24 and I was mussering it and there just does not seem to be room to make a big enough hole under the hvac and mt sing din all ready sticks out past the the hole

That turned out very nice and clean - your friend did a great job.

When you say he would be happy to make more of them, what would it be - a double DIN install kit essentially?

In order to fit a double din deck some trimming in the radio cavity needs to be done. The lip with the hole that the stock radio plastic 'peg' fits into needs to be removed to allow for the replacement deck and wiring to fit closer to flush with the bezel. There is a metal brace there that needs to be removed, trimmed, or bent out of the way. I chose to cut it off. The plastic cross bar between the heater controls and the deck also needs to be removed to allow the new deck to sit a little higher to match the opening of the new bezel. The original mounting holes are not used. I suppose you could if you wanted to custom fab some brackets. I used some L-brackets that had pre-drilled holes. There is enough area for new mounting holes.

As for the bezel, this is where to get one: http://shop.doubledmods.com/1995-1999-Chevy-Cavalier-Double-Din-Radio-Bezel_c2915.htm

Note that you can send in a bezel (your original or spare/salvage whatever) to be modified or they can supply one for you. Note also there is waiting period for these.

If there are any more questions I'll answer the best I can. It's been a couple months since this was done so I may have missed some detail.
