I have always had custom systems and am used to the plexi, that is why I mentioned it. Also if he is willing to take out his back seat and replace it with plexi why not just make a bandpass and do it right.

I really don't think I've been clear in getting my idea across. For one thing, the whole back seat is not going. I'm building a sealed box with a large front panel to fill the hole made when the driver's side of the rear seat is taken out. I've decided to try and bend some steel into a grille to cover the cone. I'm not too great at cutting and working with plexiglas, so I've decided to keep it simple. I'm going to offer to build a bandpass for Anthony ( I don't care about his sound) so I can learn how to do it. Maybe later I will change the sealed part of the assembly to a bandpass. As soon as i can get the pics on a site, i'll link up some sketches of what I'm talking about.

Your setup makes me cream my pants. It will be similar except for a few differences. One: A single 10" sub. Two: I can't fiberglass, so It will be tweeded mdf. Three: it will only take up the left side (My back splits the just past the midpoint.). Four: Where it looks like your seats are just dropped, I'm going to completely remove the side in question and leave the other side as is.

yeah my sunfire doesnt come with split seats, just the single bench seat in back, wich is a mute point since i pullled it out and i'm sticking my amps and eq's where the backseat used to be.

I'm going to have a compartment under the sub box for my amp. It will be lit from above with a blue neon that looks like @!#$ since the casing melted in the sun, and have ducts to either side in which I'm going to mount cooling fans. Yes, I know the heat sinks on the amp are plenty, but fans are fun and give it a few more bling points.

if its a sealed compartment then the heatsinks wont be enough if you do seal the amp up in a box do make sure you use fans.

nah, the amp won't be sealed. It will be a compartment, with one side open (front) so I can tune the amp and show off the shiny blingness it is. I'm just gonna have 2 cooling ducts, one to either side.

put both fans on one side to get the best effect, then just have an opening on the other side to match.

or even better, have a fan at each end, one sucking cool air in, the other blowing hot air out....just like the inside fo a computer case....very effective for keeping the air circulated and getting rid of heat.

heh, if you had nothing but time and money, i always thought a cool look for a cavy would to make it a 2+2 coupe... in otherwords, make custom lightweight seats that matched your front seats, but only have two, and in the middle of the two seats, a custom fiberglass enclosure that held a sealed box, one that held maybe 2 12s...

the only problem is, it would take alot of time and money. also, it doesnt work in the real world, if your car is a daily driver and not a show car, somone will see the enclosure, perhaps just some ahole that will ruin your custom enclosure trying to pry the subs out quickly.

in the real world, a top ported bandpass like sndsgood has would be ideal. show car look, but, is still hidden to deter would be thieves.

mine is a daily driver, so I'm going for something that lookes stock when you glance at it (tweed covering the mdf since I don't know how to glas, that is close to stock) it looks stock, but when you look again has a pretty pearl sub in it with a compartment for the bling-blingin amplifier. That way it looks good without being obvious to a thief. I'm gonna make a cover-cussion to put over it incase I just happen to be loaded down with people and for if I have to leave the car for a long period of time.

heh? long period of time? i used to work with a guy that before he reformed used to be a car theif...even without the right tools he could be in a car in seconds and make off with your stereo just as fast. lol. so yeah, long period of time doesnt matter, if he is good and not just some bum high on crack throwing a brick through your window, you only have to be gone a couple minutes

then again, i would rather have a pro jack my car than some drugged out looser taking a crowbar to my trunk. either way your gear is gone, but at least some of them dont use crowbars...

but yeah, if you are going to have the subs actually showing unless you cover them up, invest in a good alarm...

The pad is as much for deterring thieves as it is for protection from sun. Not to mention that it will be in there more secure than the seat ever was. It will be attached to the same rods the seat was on, and lock into the place the seat locked into. Beyond that, I'm seriously considering drilling my trunk panel and bolting it down. The sub and amp will be mounted with heavy screws, then I'm gonna use a die-grinder to take the heads off of them. My friend has screw-outs, so If I need them out it woun't be a problem. I think that should work well, what do you think?

thats actually not as good idea as having both fans on one side. your basically wasting a fan with that method. put both fans on one side, either sucking cool air in, or blowing hot air out. putting one on each side means your only moving as much air over the amp as one fan can pull. if you have two fans on one end your moving twice as much air.

sndsgood is right with a fan at each end you are bascally creating a convection oven.
Re: Inward Firing Sub Question
Friday, February 25, 2005 8:22 PM
actually, no hes not... 04silvercavy, you are kinda right in the convection oven theory, except it works in reverse....basically you are using one fan to pull warm air off the amp and the other is used to bring cool air into the amp enclosure, which is then in turn sucked out by the other fan. this is the foundation for almost every computer case on the market now. it is a tried and true, proven methodfor cooling a sealed case/enclosure.

Both fans are never going to be pulling and pushing at the same rate therefore there is going to be a backup of hot air being moved back over the amp that will cook it pretty quick.
I am A+ certified in computer repair. that is almost the first lesson that they teach you in cooling techniques. Even then would you rather have one pushing and one pulling at almost the same speed or two pushing at twice that speed through an open path for expulsion of hot air?

heh, just do like me, be safe, my computer has 3 fans pulling and two fans pushing,lmao...but no, thats a interesting discussion...i have heard good arguments on both theories for push and pull, or just pull....i dont know enough to say which one is better...

From what i have seen just push works better than just pull for some reason. But also from what i have seen only having one on either side is a very bad idea. Five fams total seems like a lot. What are you running?

Re: Inward Firing Sub Question

I was not aware of the speed differences and probable probelms due to that. Thanks for the heads up. Typing is very hard with a finger wrapped up. I hammered my index finger in October, and the new nail just grew out to the point that I can pull the old one out. Unfortunately, it's still sensitive and bled a little, and I'm out of bandaids. now I've got a small peice of gauze and a lot of tape.

heh, its only a pent 4 3.2 prescott...however, the thing runs hot when i start throwing games like halflife 2 and EQ2 ect at it...

but yeah, in audio install mags i have seen both, push pull, and just push or just pull

ok, I've got some pics. My friend and I used a cad program to make it, and I decided to put a highly realistic speaker image in one of them. Enjoy.
