unfortunate news.....
Monday, February 21, 2005 10:51 PM
i don't post too much on here but i do read a lot of what goes on and what everyone has to say..... unortunately on sat. i was the victim of theft. i had my car broken into and everything was stolen out of it..... which included a custom sub box that i had painstakingly built with proper volume and everything. i do have some pictures of the box as it was being built but i don't know how to post them. but i will give you a list of what was stolen.

headunit-- Sony xplod last years model with the flip down face remote and everything
all wiring was taken
the brand new not even 3 weeks old kenwood 2505 10" sub
the custom spider web box which wasn't completely finished since it still needed paint
my 2 amps--- a koiiler xm-7676 for the 6x9's and an spl crm400-2 under rated for the sub i know but i didn't care

so now i'm off to a new set-up i'm thinking of all swiss audio any sugestions?

also if someone want's pictures of the box to host let me know

I suggest before you spend any more money on a system you invest in an alarm.. same thing happened to me not long ago.. So I dropped the cash on an alarm and I'm rebuilding my sound system better than before.. Putting a system in a car with no alarm is like advertising to every thief out there "This too, can be yours...."

That sucks man but I think alarms are overestimated. You get the people who dont care if there is an alarm or not, if they want whats in your car they are going to take it regardless of the alarm. One snip of a wire and the alarm is off. And then even if the alarm does go off, people now a days will see it happening and just turn the other way to avoid the situation and act like they never saw anything. Good luck and finding out who did it though and rebuilding if you do.

i must agree with steve on this one. most people don't want to get involved. if you get an alarm then maybe a paging remote would be an idea, but then you'd be running outside with every false alarm and that might be way too frustrating. anyway, good luck with the rebuild and i hope you have better luck in the future.

false alarms and turning off the alarm with one snip can easily be avoided, it all comes back to the install. if the thing is just hooked up and shoved under the dash, then ya, its pointless. but if it is well hidden, sayt under a seat or in a console, and all the wiring is ran with other factory wires, then it blends right in.

While I do so your points and agree on that, there are also times when just that little flashing blue/red or whatever color LED will stop a potential thief. But you've also got to take other measures. Like park in well lit areas, near the front of the lot if possible. Get a HU with a removable faceplate and take it with you anytime you leave your vehicle. Screw down your amp(s), sub box(es), and sub(s) with odd shaped screws (flat head, philips, torgue, hex, square, triangle, etc) . If anyone ever decided they wanted to have a go at my system they'd pretty much need an entire toolbox and a lot of time to get it out.

My alarm is well hidden and if you weren't the one installing it, or me, then you wouldn't really know where to look for it, ask your installer to hide it in a place that's not easy to get to or where they won't think to look for it. And honestly, I'd rather be running outside to find it to be a false alarm, then walking outside to find all my stuff gone.

Thanx for your thoughts guys......

Cody---- i do have an alarm.... when they entered my vehicle they popped the hood and started cutting wires...... they didn't just cut the alarm wire but they cut my accesory wires as well. Also i did install my equipment except for the alarm(which i went to a friend of mine's shop to have that done)... i used 3 diff. styles of screws the head unit had the normal 2 screws and the 2 torx in the under part... the sub box had phillips, square head, and torx but not that that matters... all you need today is one of those screw out things from craftsman and you have a universal theft device.

i have thought about a paging remote as well but i'm not to keen on the whole alarm area any suggestions on brand and what the range of the remote is.

as for hiding the alarm i had no worries about that cause it took me 15 min. to find it. and they told me where it was.

if that is how they disabled the alarm, you may want to consider a hood lock system to better keep unwanted individuals out of there.

a car alarm is a great investment if you get a good alarm and its installed properly, and an alarm without a battery backup is worthless. you could snip every wire going to my alarm and my battery backup will still cause the alarm to go off.

in two years i was broken into twice, in the last 9 years with an alarm ive never been broken into.

yes if they want your stuff they can get it, but reality is 90% of theifs are stupid and lazy, if they see an alarm, they just move over to the next car without one and get the easy stuff, they look for easy targets, the harder it is to take the more thiefs youlle avoid

the only place you'll ever see my car is in the campus parking lot, the supermarket buying moms groceries, or some of the nightly hotspots(clubs, hang outs, ect). campus, clubs, and supermarket have guards with 12 guage shotguns, so no worries there, and if i'm hanging out, i'm with my car(i never leave it alone).

the only place left is my driveway. and unless your a thief who thinks you can hop my wall, pull the subs and **** out of my car(they're damn heavy), and then throw them over the wall, i doubt i have much worries with my driveway

yea, throw them over that. i dare ya..

Gold99gt----- funny thing is i don't have a trunk release... they took everything out form the rear seat... just folded it down

Jsunfire------ Swiss Audio is not an alarm company. it is an audio equipment manufacturer

sndsgood--- i work full time but i was at my part time job (beer money job) at the mall.....

If any of you can tell me some good paging alarms it would be a great help...

I like to bolt the box to the car from the inside of the box, no L brackets or anything like that.

A lot of people swear by the Viper paging alarms, I've never heard anything bad about them. I've got an Audiovox Prestiege APS 996A series alarm. Its got about a 1/4 of a mile radius for the pager. The alarm that's right above that has a 1/2 mile or mile radius I think, I'll have to look it up. But 1/4 of a mile is good enough for me since I'm never that far from it anyway. I'd also invest in some real locking hood pins or something similar next time

SomeGuys B.. nice house! But I have a question.. with that kinda house, why are you driving a sunfire? lol

like i said, most college campus's dont have security guards armed with 12 guage shotguns. theres only one way in or out 2. the south gate or the north gate, everything else is fenced off. so where they gonna take the sub? they cant just walk out of the gate with it

no man, you'd have to see it to understand. crime in dominican republic is a bit high because of the amount of poor people here. so any upscale institution protects themselves. Each parking lot of the school has 2 guards who walk around and keep an eye on things. they're actually Watchmen...with 12 guage shotguns, and anyone can hire them. all the neighbors around here pitched in and we have one that walks up and down the street makin sure nothing funny goes on around here. all the bums from the poor parts of town come to the richer parts of town. it sounds bad, but its not. hard to explain really.

but in any case, i go to PUCMM(the only University here that is valid in the US. a diploma from here holds the same weight as one from a university over there. in fact, alot of people come here to study medicine because you graduate in 6 years provided you dont fail anything along the way)
