4x6 and 6x9 recommendations
Wednesday, February 23, 2005 7:49 PM
Well, Ive been thinking of new speakers for a while now and have had many people tell me I should get a component set for up front. I have a pretty limited budget and want to just get some decent speakers that will fit perfectly into the stock locations without extra work. I just need some good speakers that won't blow or distort if I turn it up a little. Right now I have a sony explod headunit and 2 12" subs and an amp, both power acoustik. Anyone have recommendations for some 4x6s and 6x9s to compliment the system?

Links would be muuuuuuch appreciated! Thanks!

Blaupunkt..... I would scrap the 4x6s though. They are terrible. Get some spacers or make your own and at least put in 6.5 coaxials. I have Blaupunkt Overdrives and they are amazing. The 6x9s sound like a sub

Mikey mikey mikey... I have a set of blaupunkt component I can get you for the front, and we'll figure something for the rear. Don't go 4x6, go 6 1/2 . Or you can get silly like me and do a 6 1/2 and a 4 inch in your door panel :~

I have the polk MMC690 6x9's and the the polk MMC 460's 4x6's and i love them to death. The 4x6's are actually pretty damn decent for a 4x6. instead of using an oval speaker, they have a 4" round woofer and a seperate tweeter and built in cross-over. the only way to put them in the stock braket is to cut a small part of the backside off. and the basket on the 6'9's is honkin HUGE!! so you'll have to get creative mounting those....i found i could get away with bottom mounting mine and still clear the trunk bars. these speakes can be had on sale if you can catch them for $90 for the 4x6's, and $160 for the 6x9's. they sound nice and clean and the 6x9's have decent bass and the 4x6's have damn good mid bass. i cant wait to amp these things up instead of using my head unit so i can get some good clean power to them to see what they can really do.

Jeffy Jeff Jeff, I knew you would see this post sooner or later. Guess we will figure everything out when I get back for Spring break. I really want to get a lot done that week cause I've been bragging a little about the car up here at school, and when I bring it up after spring break its got to be perfect.

Suggestions are still wanted though. I do have subs already and I don't really need each speaker acting like an extra sub. Let's keep it somewhat basic.

We'll get -r- done when you come back for spring break. Most of my audio stuff should be in.

I'm gonna look at some infinities myself. My girlfiend got infinity component 3.5's all around for her piece of stinking, rotting, horrid, shyte jetta that I spent 3 weeks getting into running condition. They are pretty good for tiny ass 3.5's in my opinion. Obviously the bass is not there, and the sound is oriented on the high side, but the mid-range response isn't bad. As soon as she gets a sub, I think it will balance out a lot better. Anyway, I'll let you know what I dig up on infinities.

Infinities. But depends on your price range. Referance series:

Either the REF6402CF or REF6402CFP

REF6402CF
4"x6" Two-way
MSRP U.S. $: $99.95 pair
Power Handling, RMS: 40 Watts
Power Handling, Peak: 120 Watts
Sensitivity: 92dB
Frequency Response (±3dB): 72Hz - 21kHz
Mounting Depth: 2-1/16"
Impedance: 4 Ohms

REF6402CFP
4"x6" Two-way plate
MSRP U.S. $: $119.95 pair
Power Handling, RMS: 45 Watts
Power Handling, Peak: 135 Watts
Sensitivity: 92dB
Frequency Response (±3dB): 72Hz - 21kHz
Mounting Depth: 1-15/16"
Impedance: 4 Ohms

And if you want 6x9's

REF9602I
6" x 9" Two-way
MSRP U.S. $: $139.95 pair
Power Handling, RMS: 100 Watts
Power Handling, Peak: 300 Watts
Sensitivity: 92dB
Frequency Response (±3dB): 46Hz - 21kHz
Mounting Depth: 3-3/16"
Impedance: 4 Ohms

REF9603I
6" x 9" Three-way
MSRP U.S. $: $169.95 pair
Power Handling, RMS: 100 Watts
Power Handling, Peak: 300 Watts
Sensitivity: 92dB
Frequency Response (±3dB): 46Hz - 21kHz
Mounting Depth: 3-3/16"
Impedance: 4 Ohms

NOW understand, these are base models. I had them in the past, and they sound better and last longer then top of the line Sony and pionner speakers, IMO.

Infinity speakers are top of the line brand, you pay for the quality, or the sound and the materials.

If you want mid level models, then get Kappa's.

Or if you want top of the line, Kappa perfects.

I find infinites here to be less than the other brands, or if not very close. Good ole' Texas.

Awesome, will I be able to take the stock ones out and fit those right in with no problems? Basically, mounting and connecting wise, are these exactly the same as the stock speakers just better quality? Will these be fine running right off the headunit without an extra amp. I just want to keep these speakers as simple as possible, especially the install.

well, I think (not sure) that you're gonna have to cut off the harnesses that go to the factory speakers and crimp on some connectors. In terms of size, as long as it's 4x6 up front, and 6x9 in the back, you'll be fine, they'll just put them in the same hole. Plug and play. I'm not sure what the rms off the stock head unit, or whatever head unit you're using is, but in a lot of cases (at least aftermarket) you'll rms about 20 watts. This will give you okay sound, but if you want clean sound at loud levels, you should look into a 4 channel low power amp with output wattage closely suited to the speakers you're looking at.
On a side note, I'm pretty much guaranteed an install job at Circuit City. Cheap tronics, damn cheap Snap-On tools. They litterally called me back two hours after I submitted my online application. I had my interview with the install manager this afternoon, and he scheduled me with the store manager tomorrow at noon thirty. I have a feeling I'll be on the clock by tomorrow evening.

Would everyone recommend to go w/ at 6.5" for the front instead of the 4x6? I want something that will sound good!
Thanks!

I personally like the sound of a 6 1/2 up front, rather than a 4x6. More surface area = more midbass

Get a set of Focals.......

I've always had good luck with pioneer.

what all is involved in fitting a 6.5 into the 4x6 hole? Do I need to cut away any of the door inside?

infinity ref 6.5"s...all you need is a $10 adapter plate, or make your own from a un used speaker grill. all you gotta do is pull out the 4x6, put on the plate, seal it with dynomat, and you now have a much large speaker that is round and will put out much more without distorting.

if you cant afford the infinities(low 100s), polk is a good alternative with their entry lvls.
pioneer is a decent brand, but, as far as clarity and over all sound quality, the speakers from infinity and polk in the same price range blow pioneer away. same with sony and the others.

eclipse sounds pretty good, but they handle NO bass on their smaller speakers, even some of their entry level 6s...

MB and others offer superior sound, but for his budget they are out.

also, dont spend alot on your rear speakers. why? simply because you want your front speakers to carry most of the sound to give correct imaging... you want bass and fill sound from behind.

so, i got a cheap pair of polk 6.5"s and a set of referance 6.5" components for the front, total cost would have been the same if i had gotten two sets of infinity referance two ways. but, the sound was much better.

this time, i am only going with one set of speakers up front, last time i had two sets of infinity 6.5"s, one in custom kick panels, one in the door and tweeter mounted high on the door. but, this time i am only going with one set up front now that i have a amp that can power the fronts sufficiently.

LOL!!! you must not care about sound, just thump...cause, a tweeter is what carries high frequencies. without them all you hear is dull murmurs. but, whatever...takes all kinds....

no, its just that my sub doesn't drown out my mids very often. The 4x6's in the front doors do just fine with high and mid sound. Every car I've been in, except one, the tweets just gave me a headache and made my ears bleed.
