Do I need a Distro block?
Sunday, March 13, 2005 5:55 PM
I just bought a kenwood 640 watt amp and 2 6x9 rockford speakers. i also bought a D blcok since i have 2 amps. Now that i think about it, do i really need a D block since i have a capacitor? can't i just put another wire to the new kenwood from the cap and just ground the amp like usual? I have 4 gauge running to the trunk... probably need to upgrade that. currently have an audiobahn 800 watt amp pushing my sub. the new kenwood will only be using 2 channels for now. I haven't opened the package for the D-block yet, so let me know if i should return it to best buy. thanks

just piggy back the power, ground, and lead wires from the first amp. check the fuse under the hood. you may have to upgrade that fuse, otherwise 4 guage will work just fine. 0/1 guage wire is ment for stereos over 2000 watts, and over 150amps. 4 guage will work for up to about 1500 watts, and upto about 5 amps, to about 150 amps. but this is what i think only, perhaps someone else could corect me.

i just replaced the fuse last weekend. i put a 60 amp fuse in there because the last one blew. it was in there for about 8 months. the guy at best buy told me thats pretty normal and that his blows about once per year. its an AGU fuse.

thank you very much for the info!

blowing a fuse once a year isn't "normal"....it happens for a reason.

you should add your amps together...(fuse ratings) and use that for your main fuse up under the hood....

well, the fuse under the hood was 60 amps and the 2 fuses on my 800 watt amp are 30 each, so thats 60. but now, i will need a bigger fuse under the hood, right? are the AGU fuses good, or are there others that are better?

thanks.

blowing fuses yearly isnt normal. i dont think ive ever blown a fuse in the last 8 years.

anytime u redude a wire size or branch it off the wire should be fused. so technically you dont need a distribution block since u have a cap, BUT you should fuse each wire coming off of the cap with the proper sized fuse for the wire.

people always suggest to add up the fuses of your amps and run a main fuse the saize of this total. i disagree with that, find out what power size you need, the use a fuse of the proper size for the wire itself. the fuse is to protect the wire in case of an accident, its not there to protect your amps or any other thing. if your running 4 gauge wire. in a cav or sunfire your looking at around 15' of wire. wich is good up to about 125 amp worth of juice, so run out and find you a 100 or 125 amp fuse to run inline as close to the battery as possible. this way in 6 months when u upgrade amps, your not buying another fuse to go along with it, i checked prices at a local audio store and they were around 5$ for the wafer type fuse wich is what i prefer to run. to me it makes more sence to buy one fuse and never have to replace it versus buying a fuse of the exact amperage you need. in your situation it will be no safer running a 80 amp fuse versus running a 100 amp fuse. your not gaining anything.

i agree. but isnt the fuse only good for a certain amount of power, for example, if your runnin 2000 watts and a total of about 200 amps worth of fuses on the amps, then should you not want to run a 200 amp fuse, instead of a 150 amp fuse????

if your running a wire that is basically maxing out on a 150 amp fuse. and the amps you have total 200 amps. then obviosuly the wire you are running is to small.

my point is people will buy a wire that can handle say 100 amps. they'll spend 5 bucks on a fuse that is like 60 amps. because thats what the fuse total of their curent amps are. then 6 months down the line they replace the amp with something bigger, and they have to buy another 5$ fuse. then they upgrade again and buy another 5$ fuse. your no safer running a 60 amp fuse as u are a 100 amp fuse(as long as your wire can handle 100 amps.)
