air flow?
Sunday, April 17, 2005 12:25 AM
I'm finally putting 15" H2s in my cavalier, but I'm worried about air flow. I'm afraid that the "pressure" will not escape the trunk and reach the cabin. When I put the boxes in there is maybe 1 1/2" between the top of the box and the rear deck. I have to build two seperate boxes to get them into the trunk and theres 1/2" clearance between the "mock-up" boxes and touching the sides of the trunk.
Also, how much space do you need behind the vent hole in the middle of the magnet. I was told half of the speaker diameter, but I only have 4"

my box is crammed in there....no problems with bass getting into the cabin at all.

I have been told the same ting before also..that you have to have a way for the sound waves to get into the cabin or youll be getting less bass,...no idea if it is true or not..im going to face my sub towards th cabin though so that should solve that problem...phil

if your going that route..you need to completely seal the trunk from the cabin. including the entire rear deck...the sides along the outside of the strut towers..everything.

the reason why is if you don't..it'll sound like chit. you at least have to TRY to seal it up, lol.

turn your sub box around and watch your output drop. without sealing it up it basically defeats the purpose. you'll get a much better response facing them towards the trunk.(vs. facing forwards without sealing anything up)

On another forum someone posted a link that said to basicalIy cut holes in the rear dash. They also stated that you would gain 5-15Db by doing this. I would give y'all the link, but the forum server is too busy. I have seen people install ports in their rear dash for the same purpose. BTW: I have two seperate boxes, they measure 17"x17"x16".

i higly doubt 5-15 db's maybe thats the case in a a mercedes with the full metal trunk or other such cars where the gas tank is between the trun and the interior, but not much for our cars. for one, our rear decks allready have a decently sized hole right in the middle of it that is around 8x6 between the rear speakers, and the rear speaker holes themselves are around 8x4. plenty of room for air to get into.

dont worry about the gap, that wont be an issue. if you do plan on facing the subs forward, i would highly suggest sealing off all the holes between the trunk and the interior. what this does, is basically puts your subs at the edge of the wall. so now sound has no where to go but towards the listener. this also takes away all the airspace of the trunk. and as u should know. the smaller the space the more the bass, think of how a 15" sub would sound in a basketball gym. now think of that same sub in your bedroom. wich do you think is going to be louder? the sub in your bedroom. because there is allot less space for the sub to pressurise.

I plan on facing them towards the rear, how much bass do you think I would gain by sealing the trunk and facing them forward? I would worry about hearing the speaker "flutter" too much.

if yoru hearing the speaker flutter, you have speaker issues.

hard to give any decent answer, its all going to depend on how good your install is.

Yeah, I think I will TRY to do something resembling your setup. Are those 10s? My 15s would almost fill that area. It's gonna be a bitch.
