air horn
Saturday, April 23, 2005 7:31 PM
Okay so I haven't really had to ever use my horn in an emergency before...at least not until last week...and guess what when i did i couldn't even hear the thing from inside my car. so tonight i went out and bought an air horn kit, its 3 horns and a compressor with some tubing and such and of course a relay. now the instructions are very short in fact this is what they say

Quote:

Position air horn at front of vehicle near grill, away from hot engine parts. Choose a place well protected from rain and mud splashes, and in particular, water jets when using car-wash.
Air hose should be as short as possible to ensure efficient working of the horns.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE POLARITY!
Connect the positive terminal of the compressor to the positive of the electric system and the negative terminal to the negative.

then there are 2 crappy diagrams showing grounded horn button and horn connected to the positive. unfortunately i don't know which my car has and i don't really want to rip my steering wheel off to try to find out.

so does anyone know if a 97 sunfire is a grounded or positive horn?

beyond that I've read i should use 16 gauge wire to pull sufficient amperage from the battery any comments?

I got 4 electric Train horns.

And every time i lock my car you hear it a mile away, easy.

Positive horn trigger at horn. You can take the pass front wheel well apart, and the horn is behind the bumper cover. Or you can find the horn relay in the drivers kick panel. The easiest way to find it is to honk the horn and listen for the relay. If the horn is shot, tho, I would just disconnect it and install it where the old one is.

turns out my friend is really good with electronics and wiring and he helped me with the install of this, mind you he was at my house until about 3am (we started at about midnight) since my car is very stripped including the engine bay all i did was remove 4 nuts and pop the front bumper off (much easier than removing wheel wells, and tires). then we removed the old horn (which was by the way full of water which would explain why it wasn't working) i think he made 4 perhaps 5 revolutions with it before water stopped pouring out.

I managed to fit all 3 horns where the black honeycomb bumper is i did have to dremmel out a tiny bit of the very top portion to allow a drill in there to drill the mounting holes but nothing drastic enough to alter the effectiveness. the 3 horns are just above the metal bumper part and are basicly invisible unless you are seriously looking for them, once i put the splash guard/air deflecter back over the front bumper they will be totally hidden, and i believe very safe from water in the current location. the compressor mounted nicely to a bolt that is near the radiator and it may be visible with the splash guard on (but i dont think so).

for any interested in a VERY loud horn this could be a possible solution as it is VERY loud, the only gripe i have is that it has a higher tone than i had wanted. i was looking for more of a simi truck air horn sound (very deep) and this is a bit more shrill. we went out to test the horn last night since i live in a very dense area of town we drove to a comercial area at about 4am and let it rip and both of us just started cracking up at how obnoxiously loud it is. turns out it scares the crap outa pedestrians too (dont ask why someone was walking around at 4am in a comercialized area cus i couldnt tell ya)

I'd almost be interested in hooking the horn up to my viper alarm now just so everyone in a quarter mile area will know my car is being tampered with. may have to go find out howthats done and if its possible with my current alarm.

for anyone who is planning on getting an air horn the longer the cone the deeper the note if you want a very high pitched note go for something around 3-4 inches long if you want a deeper note look for horns that are at least 7 inches long (mine was about 7-8 on the deepest note and i'd honestly prefer even longer ones)

so after going to 3 or 4 places i finally found a place that sells 15" airhorns not to mention 24+" and train horns (good god 1000 bucks for train horns?!) i ordered a set of 15" airhorns which should deepen the sound quite substantially and i'm hoping it will be a bit more "big rig" i need to take some pictures of my current setup before i install the new ones though just so people who get the 3 horn setup from can see a good place to hide them.

you can get a 2 or 3 horn setup from autozone for about 15-30 bucks this includes the compressor, air hose, relay. you may or may not need female connectors, wire, and an on-on switch. i rewired my airhorns today after installing a new horn now i can switch between a stock sounding horn to my air horns depending on my mood/need, hopefully my 15 inch airhorns will be in by friday and i can install those this weekend.

it took me about an hour and a half to install the switch due to several problems including the fact the horn was wired for positive and it had to be reversed to grounded horn (not sure why but somehow when i installed the stock horn and rewired the airhorn it reversed it from how it was) then finding the correct wire in the steering colum proved to be fun since there must be 50-100 wires that are bundled in there. i ran outa daylight so i couldnt wire it all up pretty but its wired never-the-less so tomorrow i get to solder the connections and tape it all up then find a good spot for my switch.

as for the aooga sound theres really no need for it my current airhorn is 118 dB and my new ones are suppose to be around 130 dB. "To give some perspective, the sound level on the deck of an aircraft carrier 50 feet from a military jet aircraft taking-off using an afterburner has been measured at 130 dB. The threshold of pain is 130 dB, anything above that level causes immediate ear damage." basicly this means you can hear my horn over traffic at roughly a quarter mile away.

I'll try to get some pictures but i dont have a digital camera so i'll have to steal my parents, and they of course are on a cruise right now...

as for bossman you rock! I'm gonna try to hide my 15 inchers somewhere in the front bumper area though i'm not sure thats gonna work too well if they dont fit there i'm gonna have to relocate the compressor and that will be a pain . how long have you had your airhorn and doesnt the engine heat melt the air tubing?

I have had my air horn since January or so. No, engine heat does not affect the hose at all.

Boomboomcavalier, email me,... my address is in my profile.

Mine are running off my air ride tank. I have 2 viair 380 compressors to fill the 5 gallon tank, and a 1/4" hose running to the front feeding the air horn. I doubt any compressor could fill fast enuff to make the 15" inchers sound real loud. You may want to invest in a small tank and compressor to fill it. Mine is damn loud.

Email me guys if you have any detailed questions, cause I don't visit this area too often...
