biggest weakness is the diff....... thats all we have blown in the I@!#$zu's..... I know you stated you dont want to do a trans swap, but honestly its the cheapest way to get a stronger trans into your car......
There is one answer for the I@!#$zu, the older machined gear diffs...... I think it was pre-94 trans...... there is one in the classified (machined gear diff).

install will not be cheap. the trans would need to be removed from the car, then taken apart to install the diff. then reassembled and the trans put back in the car. if your not in a hurry, i can tell u how much in a week or 2, as my tranny as at the shop right now getting a quaiffe put in, then ill be having the tranny swapped in. but total, i would think would be around a g-note for the whole process if your gonna pay someone to do it. maybe more.

If you can pull your trans, and put it back in yourself....... it shouldnt cost much at all. Thats where most of the labor comes in.
To install this diff, they just need to open up the trans pull the old diff out, drop the new diff in, measure the clearences (to make sure it doesnt need shims) Maybe swap ring gears between the 2 diffs (to keep the ring matched with the pinion for wear purpuses).... and close it back up. Maybe have some new axle seals, and input shaft seal put in while its there..... and done.

when i get it back ill post what it cost me. speedracer makes a good point about cost cutting. if you have the tools and time to remove the tranny yourself, youll save alot of money.

The Isuzu (designed) but GM-built transmission used in 95-99 J-cars was made cheap. They didn't use the real solid Isuzu parts.
If you swapped in the proper Isuzu-built parts... it would be stronger. Or so I've heard.
(I have the getrag

)
Just wondering why you are so against doing the NVG-T550 swap. It's really not that much custom work to get it to work. I never previously did any major work on a car, especially not with transmissions, and I was able to swap out my Isuzu with the NVG with no hitches. Let me tell you, its one hell of a tranny. I wish I would have done it earlier. And the cost really wasn't all that much. For the tranny, new seals, new throwout bearing, SPEC Satge 2 clutch, all new bolts, etc., it only cost me about $700. Doing the work yourself is the secret in low cost. If you have any questions about it, shoot me an e-mail.
But yeah, the weakness in the Isuzu is deffinately the differnetial. That's what went out in my Isuzu and I wasn't even driving it that hard. But whatever you decide to do, make sure you do something with the diff. That is your weak point.

cool... but what would the advantage be?

JBO'S Mr. 64.....
depends....... if your abusive to your car, the Getrag holds up a bit better....... plus I like the shifter, and the feel of shifting better in the Getrag.....

They both have internal slaves, however you cannot use the Isuzu slave with the NVG tranny. They are almost identical except for the way one of the lines runs. It won't fit in the NVG case, so you have to have the NVG slave.
