Custom Short Throw Shifter

I don't know if this is making sense to anyone but.....

I like the look of Hurst Shifters, but they don't make them for our cars, so I'm thinking about finding a cosmo or any other short shifter for our cars, and adding a Hurst shifter Stick and Knob. while I'm at it, I'd like to change the pivot point on the stick, for an even shorter throw. You guys think this is a good idea or not worth the time?

yep, sure is...

i took my 97z24 shifter apart, cut it down 4 inches, and welded on about 2 inches of a hurst 'stick' and put a custom billet aluminum t-handle on top of that. end result was you could make out the 'H' on the stick and saw the chrome of it just a little bit sticking out of the boot. it shifted so much better to lol

Sounds good, but isn't that the same as cutting down your stock shifter 2 inches and adding a heavier knob?

Yes. He didn't change the throw....Changing the pivot changes the throw.
Changing the angle is the better way to make it work.

The Added weight probably made it feel a hell of a lot better. My 8-ball on my HHR made shifting better.

A short throw shifter works by making the part under the pivot ball longer, meaning you dont have to move your arm as far, but are required to use more force. It makes it feel much better, the heavier knob adds to that feel. The amount of throw you can reduce is limited by the distance from the floor under the shifter assymbly, to the pivot ball. If you can make this distance further, by makeing the shifter assymbly sit further from the floor, then you can make the shifter throw shorter, cutting the shifter on the top will only shorten the amount you have to throw a little bit, but making the bottom part of the shifter longer will reduce throw a lot. If you found out how much you can raise the base before it will not fit under the center console, then made the part that connects to the shiftercableto the pivot ball as long as possible, you would get a great feeling shifter, especially after you cut the top part down a little and added a nice weighted knob.

what if you carve out a hole under the shifter base, and fabricate a aluminum box? would you then be able to reduce the throw even more?

gmanZ made an interesting example of how throws work.....and proved that just cutting a stock shifter down DOES indeed shorten the throw. granted not as much as a shifted designed to have less throw, but its a good cheap man's mod

go over Here and see what i mean.

So if I took my shifter out, cut it off between the ball and where the cables attach, welded one inch into it, Basically I'd have a shorter throw?

^^ if you can weld plastic.

and if you can, you should weld stuff for me because that'd be some skill right there

what is with all the cheapy short throw shifter threads? just buy a damn shifter.. they're not that expensive

i'll repeat myself in this thread.

Shift throw is the angle of degrees (as measured from the side) the stick must travel in order to propagate a gear change.
a stick could be 2inches long or 2 feet, it still would have to travel the 90degrees or so from first gear to second gear.
changing to a short throw (even if it were the same 2inches or 2feet) would alter the 90degrees to 60degrees from first to second. THAT is a shorter throw. the actual length of the stick means nil.

since the only thing actually shifting the transmission is the shifter below the pivot, effecting anything above the pivot doesn't actually change the shifter throw.
But not many people think of it that way.. the distance you move your hand is not how throw is measured.

The shifter "south" of the "ball" is metal....... cut it, weld in a spacer. You might need to lift the whole plastic bracket assembly up to clear the floor, but thats easy to do with a couple washers. Chris is running a "custom" Short Throw Shifter in his S/C cav. The knob to ball section is OEM length, but the lower section is longer.

shifter was made by FarmerZ24 back in the day.
