Any idea what you are going to do for the shift fork tips? Anything that can be done?
I am definitely interested though.
I had a thought on the shift fork tips...
What about brazing bronze onto the area that the nylon normally covers? If you do it right, you should be able to build up enough material then chuck that baby in a mill and mill it to tolerance and lubrication retention Ra.
For really bulletproof forks I'd say TIG more material on and then mill it... but then you would be wearing the snychronizers rather than the forks... and those be expensive...At least the bronze is replaceable.. could in theory make a shift fork that been reinforced last forever and be rebuild-able...
This has been done. Ben W. had this done years ago If I remember correctly.

Since I am doing a Getrag swap anyway....I would be interested as well.

If anyone has a spare shift fork thats good or bent I would be game for firing up the torch and the mill and making one for proof of concept. Should be a simple process...
I also rebuild Getrags so if anyone needs work done...

well i talked to ben a while ago about it and he did have it done, something like $50 a tip. At that point Id look into contacting liberty gears to see what they would charge to pro face some gears...
our trans's just plain old suck. thats what it comes down to.
I have some shift forks. I know one is 1/2 gear and has bad tips. but should have the other gears not bad.
Are the tips the same on 3/4 and 5/R as 1/2?
I would be willing to get a shift fork to someone if we can get better tips.

I disagree. our tranny's seem to be pretty good, but any tranny has a weak link.

I believe the tips are the same on all of them yes...As long as I can get one, I'm almost positive I would be able to do all of them.
Our transmissions are pretty good... from an engineering standpoint they are pretty simplistic but very stout and very reliable. I think alot of us forget that our getrags hold up to well over stock power levels (in some cases 5 to 6 times rated transmission torque) and abuse from drivers as well as further abuse from stock power levels and new drivers that don't understand the finer points of preserving a manual transmission with driving habits.
I love my getrag... A few small improvements go a long way on it....

Not sure how I missed this post for so long....... but glad everyone got off the F35/F40 parts! None of them would have been swapable into the F23.
Good find on the FY1 option F23. Great for a high hp setup! To swap the FDR, you need the ring gear and pinion shaft (output shaft) from the gear set.
I have a ton of shift forks, and a complete trans, in the garage.

I just saw this as well and was going to say the same thing, F35 and F40 are SAAB transmissions, F23 is made by Getrag, no similarities.
What I posted on the 10th.....I posted this morning......
I would be willing to look into making some tips if anyone wants to donate a shift fork.

what gears and final drives are you looking at around here F40 transmissions are few and far between
JBO since July 30, 2001
So, does anyone have problems with the black parts, or is it just the White / clear tips?

the tips melt away, that fork i sent you is a 5th/rev. fork should of sent you my 3rd/4th so you could see what happens....lol. im thinking since my car is no longer going to do street duty im going to get some tip made of metal and just weld them on the fork

I wouldn't, the forks are steel, meaning you would have to weld on steel tips... the synchronizer hubs are also steel... consider the cost of replacing a fork or simply redoing whatever modification you do to the fork vs. spending another $150 on a new hub... I would stick with a softer material... Which is why I suggested brazing on material or doing as you suggested and having a tip made out of bronze or better yet, oilite, and brazing it onto the fork.
Just food for thought, since parts are few and far between and used transmissions will get hard to find soon.

mike yes all the tips are the same
alex i will be using steel because my car will be a drag only car so it wont see lots of mileage. i also have 4 transmissions so im not worried and im not suggesting anyone that street drives their car do steel tips either.
