Rim width help
Thursday, October 24, 2013 9:04 AM
I have a 2004 Sunfire. I ran my old 97 Sunfire winter tires on it and it`s time to replace. I just realized the older sunfire had 195/70/14 and the newer one SHOULD have 195/65/15. I want to get General Altimax Arctic for my car, but they dont come in a suitable 14inch size. So I am debating about getting 15inch rims. TireRack suggests 6.5inch wide wheels, and they dont have any basic ones available, only fancy ones. Canadian Tire suggest 6.0inch wide rims, and they have a sale for steelies for $25 each.

Should 195s go on a 6.0 or 6.5 inch wide rim? Does it matter? What are the differences?

Thanks for the input. I need to make a decision ASAP.

195/65R15 ....in General Altimax Arctic fit 5.5-7" wide rims.

I would go with 6" wide rims if it was me.

BTW I LOVE General Altimax Arctic tires. I had them on my HHR, and a bunch of my relatives vehicles. Epicly good in the snow.

Thanks for the help. I've never used the Altimac Arctic before, but I have only heard good things. I plan to have them studded as well. It's a shame they don't produce them in the proper 14" size. They only have: 185/65R14
185/70R14

They will screw up the speedo too much.

As far as the rim size is concerned, just for general knowledge, would putting them on 5.5" rims vs 7" rims have any effect on anything? Performance, handling, fuel economy, traction etc? If so in which way.
