Wednesday, March 16, 2005 4:48 PM
i wuz at tha dealership where i bought my car and talking to one of tha parts guys bout buying some aftermarket rims 4 my car. and he went into this whole spew about i would either need to: a) keep the radius of tha tire exactly tha same regardless of rim size or b) upgrade my brake system chip to handle a bigger tire size. Where about would i find something like that??

what he is sayin' about the tire size is right. you wanna keep the tire size about the same as stock so you wont throw your speedo off or other things like odometer. if you get a bigger tire you wouldnt have to upgrade your brake system. if you get bigger rims like 19 or 20's you might wanna look into getting a big brake kit to slow it down

Well your also going to throw off the abs system like the tech was telling you, If you chose a different diameter wheel and tire package.

That's only if the tire is a larger or smaller overall diameter. This could cause you to go into abs stops in situations that wouldn't require it. or the other way around.

well, from personal experiance, going from a 15 to a 17 isnt going to matter really if you get the right tire size, however, if you get sizes over a 17, you will notice a differance. its really gonna depend on the size of tire. it will prolly throw your speedo off a bit, make your abs come on at bad times and not work as effectively.

there is more tread to make the car stop quicker, hence, the tires are going to grab more traction and lock up easier, however, the fact that you have more rolling distance means it will take longer to stop the car, just like when you get larger tires your gearing gets higher and your take off the line is slower due to higher gearing. so, my retarded sence of logic and physics(which prolly sucks) is telling me that the brakes will have fewer revolutions of the wheel to stop the car, there fore, it would take slightly more revolutions to make the car stop from 60mph. more contact of rubber to road should help with the stopping problem, but how it will affect abs i dont know. cause it could work one of two ways, due to fewer revolutions of the wheel the abs might come on before or after you need it...

either way, if you dramaticaly increase size, it will affect the abs, how much? i have no idea, never done it. but as far as a "chip" for your abs, i think the guy was smoking crack. talk to someone on here with 18s-20s and ask them, or go to a tire and wheel shop and talk to them. but be prepared for a slower car and perhaps slightly screwed up abs.

ok im bringin this back from the dead because the other day i was looking at tires and was question the guy about gettin wider tires for better handling. he said i shouldnt because it will mess up the ABS system. He said that i will be doing higher speeds and the ABS will kick in. thats scared the poop out of me when he was sayin this. i didnt want to believe him so thats why i came on here and posted to see what you guys say about this. is this true? has this happend to anyone on here?

Just get the same wheel/tire diameter.

The guy knows what he's talking about... but explained it completely wrong.

You CAN go to GM and have them recalibrate the PCM for the different tire size. Most people don't do it, but it is possible. Whether or not the dealership actually knows HOW to use their Tech 2 terminal to do it is another matter entirely.

If you put better than stock tires on the car, the ABS system won't come on as often... since the grippier tires will actually stop the car instead of skid... from my personal experience.
