Security light issue with cluster swap

Hi All! I am working on a 98 Sunfire (3 speed auto w/ digital odometer), I have swapped out the gauge cluster because of a broken trip odo switch and a burned out odo back light. The vehicle I am putting it in does not have power door locks or passlock (it is about as base as they come). Apparently the new cluster I have came out of a vehicle that had passlock. The vehicle will not start with the new cluster installed. I have done some searching and have found how to switch clusters between two passlock equipped vehicles, but haven't found anything about switching from a no passlock cluster to a passlock cluster. I figure that the new cluster is looking for a signal from the ignition cylinder and the PCM, but since it isn't finding any it is returning a no-start signal to the fuel pump.

Any help in figuring a way to trick the cluster into thinking everything is ok would be appreciated. Thanks!

Passlock was equipped on all 96+ J bodies, regardless of the features. It is not anything to do with locks, it is an anti-theft device. Follow the instructions in the interior FAQ to reset the theftlock/passlock and you'll be good to go.

^ So even though there is no resistor in the key, Passlock is still included? I had thought that early passlock equipped cars had a smal resistor in them. I guess it is different for the J bodies. Thanks a lot!

Yup, no J-body ever had a resistor in the key...

J-Bodies do have Vats Resistors in the keys... My cavalier has a chip in the key as well as alot of other j-bodies. matter of fact all of GM cars have them from i believe 94 on. but the passlock could be triggered if you had a aftermarket radio installed. without relocating the old radio.

true.. go get a random key made it will work no chip. Passlock simply measures resistance in the key, basically telling the ignition there is an actual key and it fits in the ignition
