can the gauge clusters be swapped between 98 and 04? or is that impossible? (aka pain in ass to do)

pain in the ass to do... you have to swap everybit of wiring from the engine back.... that means rewiring an entire car...

No becasue in your car the milage is kept in the odo, where in 00+ J's the milage was kept in the BCM. As said, the only "easy" way to get thsi cluster to work in your car is to rewire the entire car. Ontop of that you would also have to do a dash swap because the 95 - 99 clusters are a different shape, and use different mounting points than the 00+ clusters
