Prepping and Paintings ?'s

Ok...pretty much what the subject is. I took apart my dash today and got the bezel around the steering column, guages, and cd player out(this is the part i'm going to paint). I got the dimming and fog light mechanism out. I was wondering how to get the cigarette lighter out. NOW.....

For prepping what do I need to get it all prepped and ready for paint. Also where do i get it at? Next...I've heard Krylon Fusion or SEM vinyl paint are is best to use. It can get pretty hot here in the summer and I heard in the hot weather the Fusion can get sticky and the SEM I heard doesnt do that. The only problem is I dont know any paint shops around here where I would get SEM. Would the Fusion work since I pretty much wont touch it since it's up on the dash?

Finally, if u could give me some step by steps, they would be very helpful...also...I DID search.

Thanx for any help

Hey i painted the interior of my cavy white about 6 months ago. I just started posting on J-Body and cant figure out how to post pics but go to my profile if you want to see the interior. After i took off all the pieces i wanted to paint i wiped them all down with a little bit of alcohol to clean them all. I used 1 coat of adhesion promotor 2-3 coats of white paint (stock color was the black/chacoal) and a clear coat. The paint i used i got from a local hobby shop. They reccomened it and said it was used to paint RC cars. It worked great and color hasnt faded or turned yellow or anything like that. Just make sure u give plenty of time to dry. As for the cigarette lighter that whole piece shold pop right out of the dash piece. Let me know if u have any other questions.

hey, i'm painting my interior right now with krylon fusion in black and white.
i took everything out... sand with 220 grit, wash, then apply 2 coat of normal krylon primer, then send with 400 grit, wash, apply 2 coat of paint, dry, send 600, wash, 3 coat of clear with minwax polycrylic (that prevent the thickness). i got krylon fusion at wal-mart and minwax polycrylic at canadian tire for about CAN6$ a can. Til now, the paint look really good, and is not sticky, even on the vinyl part. For the lighter, hold peice of each side, front and back, and turn counter-clockwise, it will unscrew, and then pop out!

i too am painting with krylon.. i think as long as you use a clearcoat it doesnt get sticky... or at least mine hasnt.. also make sure you let it dry 7 days to it is chip resistent before you put your clear coat on..

same with vinyl paint.. use a sealer.. as for where to find it.. search the net, im sure you can find someone selling what you are looking for

prepping with krylon is as easy as soapy water to get all the crap off, and i have been sanding lightly with 220 grit sand paper.. just to be safe.. good luck, and if you screw up.. no biggie you can repaint

I am using SEM right now and it works awesome. Go to Lordco, providing you are in Canada, that's where I got mine. Just ask them for it. I used a industrial strength cleaner first, then used adhesion promoter, then the SEM and it worked great. <br>

Fish loves it
