Ok an ad has come up here for a '90 Cavalier Z-24
Ad listing
I've been looking for a cheap car and I like these Z-24's. I'm a car newb though and was wondering if you guys think this would be a sensible choice...? Also, I've been hearing that the auto transmissions on these cars are pretty dodgy and die quickly.? Should I be very concerned about that? The car doesn't have ALOT of miles....
Anyway, hope to hear your thoughts.
Thanks!
Well you get what you pay for. I doubt a $500 car will be as reliable as a $1500-2000 used car. You could end up buying this car and then spending a $1000 in maintenance....you never know. Not to put down 2nd gens, but if you look at even early year 3rd gens, you can find them extremely cheap...I think you need to just keep shopping around.
Good Luck.

Z types are sweet i almost bought one
Don't make it harder for me to let go Shane!
I supposed I'll keep looking... 2nd gens just turn me on so much

Got any idea how much it'd cost to replace the struts?

Depends on the shop.
I've seen prices of $250-400.

oh and that's just the labor price, not the price for new struts.
Are you looking for stock replacements?

Yeah, you want to get the KYB GR-2s. They make them for just about every make and model car.

What about this one...
Clicky me.
It's a high-mileage 1997 coupe that's at a Ford dealership over in Aiea. It might be worth at least checking out and you can probably talk them down on price a bit.
Found another one...
Clickity too.
If you look down the list, it's the 1999 listed for $1,500.00. There's not much detail on it at all and it's probably not that great, but still you might wanna check it out if you have time. Looks like it's listed in Honolulu.
If i was you, id go for a 95+ cavalier...and it also depends on what do u wana do with it, if ur lookin for performance or style modification(tuning ++) then go for ne 95+, if ur lookin 1st of all for performance go for a z-24, BUT a low mileage ( 100 000 and -) are hard to find at a low price.. and NO there isnt that much trouble with a 95+ cavalier...i have a 97 and its greeeeat!! had to change some things but thats normal ull do the same on a 97 bmw. Also it has a sexy shape...better than HONDAS

, so if ur lookin for style, go again for the 95+!! **God bless the cavalier**
Hey thanks for all the help guys.
Thanks for the links elton, didn't see those before
I had a 90 Z24 that had the same problem needing to be "warmed up in drive". The car still worked fine the 2 years I had it. Bought it with 136,000 miles and sold it with 163,000 miles on it. It then went to 3 more owners after me. One of them replaced the auto transmission and it ran great. Be prepared to spend some money though, things will start breaking.
