3t40 2nd gear ratio

would anyone out there know how to figure the overall ratio when running the 3t40 tranny in 2nd gear?Example 2.84 final drive with 33-37 chain gears.Would it be 2.84x1.60 or 2.53 x 1.60?????????????? Please anyone with knowledge of this please post an answer. I'm running this Cavalier on a tight 1/4 mile oval track and looking to get an advantage on some Neons I'm running against .Thanks for any help fellow J body racers!!!

It would be: 1.1212121 (chain gears) X 2.84 (diff.) X 1.60 (2nd gear)

There are three differentials available: 2.84 (what you have), 3.06 and 3.33 (very difficult to fine, but out there).

There are five different chain drive sets: 38-32, 37-33, 35-35 and 33-37(what you have).

With those options should give you some wiggle room, if you can find the correct trans to get the parts from.

If you haven't seen it yet (sounds like you have though) this thread should help. The bottom of page one has the trans code charts, with the gearing and TC listing for each trans.

Just be careful, you don't want to run out of gear.

Thanks MadJack!! for the info. This will put me on the correct path to finding the edge I been looking for!! I have a 3.1 with the heads milled .20 and a little mild camshaft from PBM.Accel Injectors.Gonna do some more bolt ons to the engine this winter, just wasn't pulling enough rpm with gear it has now.Ive done a lot of racing over the years just in the bigger chevys these little j body cars are kinda new to me and I have read the other thread you were talking bout and was pretty sure that the way you stated was how to get the ratio when running in 2nd, just needed some extra input. Thanks again for the info.

William

we are doing the same thing 1/4 mile banked oval with a 95 cav and the th125/3t40 .... so its basically 2 330 foot drag strips and we are getting killed on acceleration out of the corner

we currently have the 2.84 diff with 33/37 gears giving us the 3.18 final drive

so i'm trying to hunt down the 3.33 diff and having a hell of a time figuring out what cars it came in so i can search the junk yards

i'm thinking the fiero's had it but i can't find any of them around .... any other cars that you know of that came with the 3.33

i have found a couple 3.06 diff's out of early 90's buick century's which would put me at 3.43 final drive

but if i'm gonna do it i would rather go with the 3.33 as i can get either 3.73 final with the 33/37 or 3.33 final with the 35/35 gears ....

so who knows how to figure out what cars the 3.33 came in?
