My first car, my first Cavalier, my first accident. Totaled? (PICS)

So I used to come to these boards quite a bit when I first got my Cavalier in '05. It was my first car and other than the color, I loved it.

Well yesterday, 4/1/10, I was rear ended by a lady at a stoplight. Was my first car accident ever being in, let alone being the one driving at the time. No one was hurt, but the cause of her hitting me? She sneezed. Her car, a Hyundai Elantra, had only a slight dent in the front bumper where she hit me. My car on the other hand is a different story. Luckily no one was hurt.

At first, I figured this isn't enough damage to be totaled. The insurance agent hasn't come to inspect the car yet, but after taking some pictures, I think it is a total. I guess it is time for me to part with my first car
Only had about 65k miles for a 2002 as well.

The main reason I think the car is totaled. Bent frame in the right rear. Directly below damage in the trunk from the above pictures

What do you guys think? A total? Any suggestions for my next car. Granted I will only be paying whatever the insurance company gives me. So lets say, around 5k.

I still have all the stock rims hanging out in the shed. Just a matter of going to Discount Tire or somewhere to swap out the tires. If the come and decide it is totaled? Would I have a day or two to get that done? Or do they say totaled and I am prohibited to drive it.

Yup, totalled due to the frame damage (and significant at that in the way it folded).

My opinion? Buy another one. Mine is for sale

So... you can't jack up the car and swap the tires on your own? Yeah, I'd say its totalled, and definitely swap the tires out, unless you dont want them

I don't have tires on the stock rims. I'd have to go and swap the tires from my rims to the stock. I probably wont keep them. Only costed about $300 for the set and they are chipping. Chances are the new car won't have the same bolt pattern or might already have some rims on them.

Looking into driving my first manual as well.

yup thats totaled, considering the age of the car, the frame damage and the quarter will prolly need to be replaced.

Insurance is coming today to check out the car. I'll post what they decide to do with it and what it is worth.

I really want a manual transmission car. My cousin is teaching me today with his '98 civic, and I think I will get the hang of it fast. My dad doesn't think it is a good idea to get a manual and thinks I can't go to a dealership and test drive a manual if I don't know how to fully drive one, saying they will get upset.

Do dealerships really get that upset if I am a little jerky with driving it. I will be spending a few hours today learning with my cousin (starting, stopping, reversing, braking, turning, etc.), so I won't be stalling it when it comes to test driving. Would it be that big of a deal if my shifts aren't perfectly smooth?

I think my dad just doesn't want me to get a manual because he doesn't prefer them.

Car is totaled. Estimated repair cost was around $4400 and the threshold was about $4300. He estimated time to fix was only 14 which seems low to me. It was our choice to total it or fix it and we chose to total as we had a feeling it would take longer than that and cost more than what he estimated.

Got a check for a few bucks under $5,000. Time to say my final goodbyes to my first car before they come to tow it away.

Don't mean to keep bumping my posts...but I think I might be getting another Cav

Found a '05 Coupe with just under 65k miles for $5,000. 5 Spd Manual. You guys think this is a good price? I personally like the 03-05 front body style but the 00-02 rear end. Plus going from one cav to another, I know how they would handle and I know I can fit in the car. Driving my cousin's civic today to learn manual made me a little cramped. Did the quick BB value and it was at around $5700.

Would basically be equivalent of me trading in my 02 for and 05 with lesser miles. Sounds like a deal to me. Here is the link to the car ad.

Cavs are always pretty much totaled at this point...

The 05 doesn't look bad....

Contacted the dealer about that 05 Cav I mentioned. Car had 1 owner, no accidents or major damage/repairs, he has had the car for 3 months roughly and it hasn't sold mainly for it being a 5 speed.

Seems like a really good car for me to get. Just need to maybe add a decent set or rims to the car and change out the stereo, being it doesn't even have a cd player,.

Now I just have to convince my dad to let me get a manual. For some reason he wants me getting a 99 Ford Mustang from a private seller convertible. Don't see that being good as it is 11 years old and I live in northern IL. These winters will be a pain on the top.
