No wonder GM is going out of business..never again
Wednesday, June 07, 2006 12:56 PM
I have a 1999 Z24 that I bought in 2002 with 17 kms on it. A connecting rod snapped on piston 1 at 30 kms that required an engine rebuild by the dealer. It was covered under warranty (I paid for a 4 year, 80 kms extended) but nobody could give me an explanation as to why it snapped. Well, the car now has 110 kms and the connecting rod on piston #4 has snapped. Are these damn things made out of toothpicks? Of course GM says the warranty is over, tough luck, get a new engine. Screw them. Never again. Is this how GM builds their reputation? It's no wonder they're losing money. I'm buying Japenese next....GM will not get another dime from me and I will warn prospective buyers of my experience with GM. Sorry for the vent but this is really pissing me off. Adios amigos

maybe you should check the oil more often

low oil is the #1 cause of the rod getting tossed , on the 2.4

sucks that it happened , youve been here awhile , you shoulda known about it

I don't think so. This car was babied. I had the oil changed every 5000 km like clockwork, in fact, the oil was changed a week before the engine went. I checked the dipstick after the engine went and the oil was fine. There were no mods done to the engine, completely stock.

my old 99 Z-24 lost the rod bearings at 34,000mi. on the #1 cylinder. gm covered it under warranty(it was in 2001) they said that the connecting rod wasnt properly torqued when it was originaly assembled and it just got to loose.

oh well no biggie i guess.

My car was made with wrenches, Not chopsticks.

I spun the #3 rod bearing on my 98 Z at 70K. that was expensive

Yes, buy japanese- same price, same style of car, much better quality.
Or buy european- costs more, but way better quality, way better style of car.
I'm waiting until 2008, then I plan to buy a Volvo C30. 260hp, RWD, 6 speed manual, quad bucket seats, -hell yes. No more rattling door panels or getting smoked by avengers and grand ams.
